A big paint job!

We have recently moved into our four year old home, where everywhere is painted white, just as the builders left it when they completed the build. I want to introduce some colour now, but I don't like wallpaper, so I am trying to decide what paint to use. I know many of your readers are devotees of Farrow and Ball, but they are twice as expensive as many other paints. Are they really worth the extra money? Also, how do you go about selecting colours that flow throughout the house, but aren't bland? Any advice would be much appreciated!

While Farrow & Ball might not be the cheapest, in terms of performance they are worth the investment.

To get a coordinated colour scheme together you can’t look at each room in isolation
It would be handy to put up paint samples on the walls to look at them during different times of the day to see if you really can live with your choices,

Yes, we definitely need to see the fireplace before commenting! Actually, magnolia is a classic and maybe you're best to add colour in your furnishings/accessories, as you have with your new curtains. We need to see the furniture etc. as well. We just painted a color called "Latte" over the dark red walls in our place and we keep thinking that someone left the light on! It adds that much light to the place as the red was just sucking out any light in the place. Find a color you like more for that wall and repaint...and/or maybe add a ceramic tile backsplash? It will make it feel brighter in there immediately as you will get a lot of light reflection. I love the idea of sage green with your cabinets.

My first instinct was to move it to a garage/basement for good storage but the more I think about it the more I think I'd prime inside and out with Kilz then apply a couple of coats of white semi-gloss (use good quality paint.. Benjamin Moore) in the same white that you'd use for all the trim in your room. Be sure to lightly sand and 'tack rag' between coats. If the handles are removable by all means remove them prior to painting...fill in holes, sand smooth and paint as previous sentence. Set up inside the way you find most functional. Buy nice new knobs ( maybe crystal?) and, if it is as tall as it appears, have crown molding installed to create a custom look. It is probably far better built than anything else you could find.

I think the heather and sage tones will work well together. Putting rugs under dining tables isn't that practical for clearing up if you have kids or grand kids. I also like the sound of the yellow, but it would have to be very pale. Grey might work better, good luck x
