Ugly fireplace

Flipping a house in Seattle and the style is contemporary. What do I do with this ugly brick wood fireplace in the basement?

Depending upon the colors elsewhere you could paint it or whitewash it (the cheapest solution), or you could dry wall over it, or cover it in stone or tile depending upon the look you're going after. The mantle should be removed & IF replaced, mounted lower & chunkier.

I really like the second one, but if you really like the wood panels then suit up for creativity - you can easily have the best of both worlds. Clear your wall at home and put the wooden panels there, you can then install the mantel on the panels just like in the second picture. Hope I helped :) Best wishes xoxo

I feel in a situation like this, I would not add windows with no view that would probably end up with some type of coverings a great deal of the time. My situation would be use of mirrors to reflect available light back into room. Mirror could be styled to look like Windows etc. we have a similar situation in our kitchen, and we mirrored over the sink, and created two faux windows using mirror and drapery side pannels. The effect works great, and when you add the right lighting the effect is wonderful, day and night. Take a good look and visualize day and night views creating with mirrors designed into a "today" style and look.

1970s living room

We moved into a bungalow this year which was built in the 1970s. We are slowly updating each room but we have a living room at the back of the house which is very narrow and has an ugly 1970s fireplace. At the moment our teenage children use it as a tv/gaming room. We painted every wall in the house white initially . Can the fireplace be painted . I'm happy to leave it as it is but my children hate it. Also the hotpress is in the same room. Any ideas what to do with this ? It is at the back of the house and does not get any sunlight so is quite dark. Any advise appreciated, 0

Your room looks large and lovely but with an entrance at one end and a fireplace at the other can seem a bit long. Firstly take EVERYTHING out. This will show the room in the best advantage and get rid of clutter. Only put back things you absolutely love. I would put two sofas or a sofa and two chairs (they don't have to be a suite) in front of the fireplace OR get a solid coloured L shaped sofa as it seems you are orienting the room toward the TV. You could then put a nice rug under a light-feeling coffee table (maybe glass and wood to pick up your chimney breast) in the middle. This would allow you to get rid of the multiple small side tables. I would lighten up the alcoves alongside the fireplace, either paint or light wallpaper. Get a proper piece of furniture for the TV to stand on. TV stands are ugly. There's lots to choose from. Try IKEA. Take down the heavy curtains and put in Roman blinds in a print fabric you love (try to find one with at least 3 colours) and coordinate with your rug. You could then use colours in this to make/pick throws and pillows. At the end near the door you could put in a small table and your rocking chair and make it like a separate area for music or reading with a nice standing lamp. Get some inexpensive drum light shades to update the lighting and put in another standing lamp by your sofa, as mentioned above, and lower your pictures to eye height. Good luck!
