Seven year old with an opinion

Hi Houzzers I have 7yr old that has a very fixed idea of how she wants her room and I need your opinion on the colours she has chosen which includes a painted striped teal wall with a very pale grey main color. She picked this really colourful Chair cushion and wall paper for one wall. I have no clue how this will turn out Help!

Thank you guys I must admit I do encourage her creative side and love had choice of chair and cushion and also her paint choices. So I am going to trust her design decisions (eek! vent believe I'm saying this) first coat of grey is on and she is pleased with it she says she has a picture in her head so I'm going with the flow. Thanks Houzzers. I'll post the finished product once everything is done

If you can afford it let her have what she wants. Who knows, she might turn out to be a budding interior designer or architect. I think Zaha Hadid said she was responsible for the decor for her own room from a very early age. My daughter insisted on melamine in order to be like her friends when she was nine or ten. Within a year she was back in her old room with antique pine. She's now an architect.

I think she's made good choices for a 7 year old! Quite mature and pretty! And if you've agreed to let her design her room, so let her make the decisions. The chair has plenty of colours in it to be flexible over the coming years. And it's only one wall of wallpaper and a feature paint wall, so quick enough to swop when she wants a change.

I remember a friend who wanted black walls and a purple ceiling in her bedroom when I was little...you've got it much easier!

Hi Lisa, nice sofa. I had a red sofa for 10 years and loved it ( though mine was fabric) I've changed the kitchen/ living room and it stuck out like a sore thumb. I gave in and put in a grey leather sectional one and I must say it's much easier to decorate around. Are you in Ireland? Have you heard of the 1933 company, they have very nice suites. Red makes a big statement! Just my 2 cents worth, good luck!

I agree that something simple like a subway would work and remain a classic over time. The subway could be a shade of white/off white to match your other whites in the room. I realize many will disagee, but i still like a subway in a natural light travertine with cherry cabinets. We have a small horse farm and work in our business seven days a week, so i get what its like not to want high maintenance and to have limited time. We have travertine as our backsplash. Seal it well when its installed and it is very easy to maintain over time. It also doesn't show every spot where things spatter.

Hello Houzz Ireland, We are currently renovating a 1960's build - so as you know, there is a lot of decisions to be made!! So it would be nice to get some gems of advice from the experts to help us through this daunting task. Areas where we would really like some inspiration for - small bathroom downstairs. I would really like to do something fun with this room and although small, I think it could work really well with some funky wallpaper or possibly tiles?! I'm just not sure what to do with it. Also - pulling a whole house together?! Where do we start? We have the bigger pieces of furniture but how do I know what nest of tables goes best with a suite? Or what accessories will bring a room together? I'm due a second baby in 2 weeks time so any help at this stage would be so amazing - to guide me on the right interior design path for our new house. It looks pretty funky. You could do a deal and suggest that if it looks good enough before the wallpaper goes on you will get her some pink glass fairy lights or something similar.....?

Hi Patrina. I think it will look fab.

I was always able to do my own room - sometimes I made mistakes (like a really beautiful textured paper I remember not going so well) but I learnt from them and improved the next time... it can teach lots of other lessons along the way too so I would say go for it.
A room should always be 'designed for the user ...which is her... so if she loves those colours and patterns then it's great to allow her that experience. Best of luck :)

I too think your daughter made some great choices. My only concern is the striped painted wall.
This will only look good if neatly executed. Quite a tricky job I would think. Or will you hire a professional?

Such gorgeous wallpaper! I'm not sure about the striped teal wall, wouldn't it just clash with the paper, or am I missing something? Mind you, it's only paint so can easily be changed if it's not a good idea. It's going to look so pretty. Good luck!

She sounds switched on :) I have pale white walls with a thick central horizontal grey border in my bedroom and it looks fantastic. I've added pastel blue and purple to achieve my contrast, and I've used purple geometric and floral ted baker bedding to heighten the colour and it looks great! I would say do it!

She is very design orientated and is looking forward to seeing how it turns out. She has chosen a floral bedding to go with the chair, lovely white ring top embroidery curtains, a large all glass, mirror, Framed butterfly wall art and recycled a round white faux fur rug bought at Ikea in Germany circa 1986 we hopefully be finishing up this weekend as the workers (Mom & Dad) have regular day jobs and the project manager is concentrating on 7yr old SATS :-)

How wonderful! I often joke that I must have made over the inside of my pram, so go with it! And if I'm anything to go by, be prepared for changes every few years.... it will be exciting to watch.

So finally finished! and I tell you there is no harder task manager than seven year old. She kept us on schedule painting, glossing, etc. If she didn't like something she let you know. And with any contractor project manager/client relationship sometimes things don't go smoothly. She had a vision for her room and made all the decisions on where she wanted everything hung on the walls etc. She also chose all the soft furnisjings. So here's how it turned out, the first pic is a collage of her old room.

Thank you guys although I started out a bit nervous about the grey paint and wallpaper which she decided to axe. We really enjoyed working on her little project especially because she made all the big decisions. We now a greater appreciation for a chalk lines and we have learnt to trust her decision making skills :- )

It'll look great if you wallpaper one wall with the paper and then keep the other walls fairly neutral. Your daughter has a real flair!

@The kids room company. My daughter decided to axe the wallpaper because she didn't think if would go well with painted stripes she also decided not to 'over Crowd' the striped wall. We just allowed her free reign who knows she may grow up to be a fab interior designer!

I'm a big supporter of letting children show their creative side. We spend two years teaching our kids to walk and talk, and the rest of their lives to sit down and shut up.

If she wants to get creative with striped walls, buy some rolls of vinyl and just lay them up, you can then whip them off at any time and you haven't got horrendous paint lines or colour differentials to try and cover.

That's an awesome bedroom and I think your kid has got it sussed! Well done her...and mum and dad! :) You could always frame a piece of the wallpaper and have as more wall art for her if she still wants to?

Amazing!!!!! Love love love it. Chair is gorgeous and the whole arrangement is very clever. I'm glad she axed the paper - it was the odd bit.
