Help - Door Restoration
Hi, we are wondering if anyone could shed some light on the age of our front door? We bought the house late last year (it's late Victorian) and are slowing working on it, hoping to renovate the old front door. Trouble is, the letter box is too small for 21st century post and is nailed shut from inside, so there's a black post box on the wall next to it, some of the patterned glass (which I don't like anyway) is cracked so would need replacing, and above all, it's really draughty!
So, it is worth restoring it (depending on how old it is) or in terms of costs and efficiency would it be better to just buy new?

Comments (7)I looked at door on houzz for a short time. Seems as though a few things come into play. If you want to accentuate the vertical lines of your entrance, go vertical. If you want a more understated look whereby we see your door and panels as one -- then go either same color as door on the handle if possible and the only things showing will be the lock. I prefer a smaller handle or a horizontal plane for a handle because horizontal is a more relaxed look. vertical creates tension. What if you replaced the glass entirely with a wood shutter that opened and closed, then you wood be able to let light come through when you wanted, and shut them for privacy. Your front door is beautiful what a shame that you had an attempted break in- unfortunately we hear this a lot from clients with original doors.
If you decide you would like a new door to replicate your old one we make all of our doors bespoke and we could match it but with some much needed updates including toughened double glazing, a Secure By Design multipoint lock, hard wearing paint, insulated panels, adjustable hinges, double weather seals and a letter plate that actually fits letters in it :-)
this door was made to replicate a Victorian house in London, we even replicated the stained glass in a double glazed unit.
