I think it is almost a toss-up. The long handle is more of a feature or focal point, whereas the with the short handle, the door is. I am leaning toward the short.
Save money and buy commercial grade door pulls. The only lock you need is a deadlock. Manufacturers like Rockwood have a very large selection of door pulls including customization options and several finish grades for much less than you would spend on residential hardware simply because the commercial door hardware market is way more competitive. Catalogs are available on their websites and they list distributors. Push the distributors on their pricing.
Seems as though a few things come into play. If you want to accentuate the vertical lines of your entrance, go vertical. If you want a more understated look whereby we see your door and panels as one -- then go either same color as door on the handle if possible and the only things showing will be the lock. I prefer a smaller handle or a horizontal plane for a handle because horizontal is a more relaxed look. vertical creates tension.
So, look under: Photos, then Modern, and type Front door in the search parameter. Hope this is helpful. :=)
