What paint finish should I get this paint color in

Looking for help deciding what finish I should buy this paint in. Left picture is just testing this color on our walls. Right in a picture I found of the finished color. Looking to paint a small bedroom which we will turn in to either an office or a closet in our house. The color is Benjamin Moore "Newburg green". It's a small room with one window but gets lots of direct bright sun every day. I have read that dark colors look better in a flat finish. But im not sure which will look best for this room. Eggshell, satin, flat? Thanks for your help!

I like a matte finish but I would not want my office that color no matter how much light I would have , just because you see a small picture with a dark wall that is not like going into a cave to work

if your walls are in a good condition having a bit of a sheen will lighten the heavy load of a dark color. it may be worth the effort to prep. also i find dark colors with a matte finish come off as 'dusty' looking.

before you paint, i'd put up a couple of big frameless, color to the edges.. sample boards facing each other in a corner and really live with it a couple weeks. you'll either be drawn to it or get tired of it.

the other trick i do on myself is make my inspiration pic be my desktop photo... its amazing how after a month of looking at something all the time you get over a faddish crush.

We just painted a color called "Latte" over the dark red walls in our place and we keep thinking that someone left the light on! It adds that much light to the place as the red was just sucking out any light in the place. Find a color you like more for that wall and repaint...and/or maybe add a ceramic tile backsplash? It will make it feel brighter in there immediately as you will get a lot of light reflection. I love the idea of sage green with your cabinets.

Ooh Darzy I like your thinking. Actually the curtains are taupe and a nearly mint green - not stripes more they blend into each other (see pic). But if I got some art picking out those 2 colours that could work. I love teal but not sure about it on this wall. Maybe coral could be nice or is that too on trend? I also have an old chair I need to get reupholstered and was struggling for ideas for that. But a floral pattern with the green and taupe from the curtains and a third colour that matches the art could work well - ideas, ideas, ideas!Thank you Houzzers I knew you'd help me to look at this differently.

Hi Zoe, I think I would have to agree with your sister! The right grey will look warm, whilst giving the room a fresh, clean feel. Farrow&Ball do some lovely ones, have a look at Elephant's Breath or Pavilion Grey. This colour scheme with wooden floors (natural or painted) would look wonderful. Injections of colour could then be added with soft furnishings. Hope this helps!

I want to paint my kitchen walls inclusive of where the presses are so the wall with the window and the wall to the right. The island is a sage colour. I am thinking a very light heather colour so the kitchen will tie in with the living room (pic2) & get a rug for under the finish table to link the two. Any opinions?

A matte finish is going to give your color the best depth. what I'll say about that "dusty" appearance is that it could be the effect of flatting agents coming to the surface, a quality of low end paints. I find products like Aura have a rich and velvety appearance and showcase deeper colors better than any other product. That being said, I would recommend Eggshell so that you can bounce any light around the room. For lamps that point upward also help protect light so that it cascades back down walls. And I am all for bold color! It creates the feeling of being enveloped.

ah, well i have had the dusty look with benjamin moore paint (its the only brand i use) but i havent tried the aura. i'll keep that in mind.

Satin will at least bounce a bit of light around. Despite the walls needing the extra $$$ prep for the shinier finish. If you do that color without proper prep for the walls, floating them out smooth by a Pro, you will see every single hump and girdle bump. Prep is the spanx of dark wall colors.

That photo shoot has tons of extra lights brought in to make that color work in a picture. In person, the walls would look virtually black. Unless you add in a lot of recessed eyeball lights to wash the walls down with added light so that you can see it's actually green. And pay attention to every single thing else in the room being white or very light. That's what makes that picture work. Lighting, and light furnishings. No ugly black computer desks anywhere.

All of the furniture in this room would be a modern white laquer finish. Fun vibrant rug or a faux white sheepskin rug. And gold accents.

Dark colors on interior surfaces look best if flat finish, but are difficult to touch up.If you do not have pets or children I would suggest flat finish. If touch up and cleaning is important use a matte or scrubbable finish with as low a sheen as possible. Different paint manufacturers will have different finish names.

The nicest (and most expensive) rooms I've seen done in dark colors were high gloss. Perfect preparation, many coats of paint, followed by clear gloss varnish. Crikey, they are beautiful! For us mere mortals I like eggshell. We did our den in eggshell sort of navy blue and it looks very nice. But not as nice as gloss lacquer...
