Where should backsplash stop?

Is it just me or should the tile go to the end of the countertop?

pick your poison.... or else design so the uppers and lowers end at the same place.

i prefer the red arrow, i think the tile sticking out like at the blue arrow is silly.

For me... Mine is to the edge of the counter and up to the bottom of the cabinets

Hi lots of different options and ideas going on. I had a similar wall and understand how mean it can be to little ones. I bought and put up the expanding wood trellis. This instantly covered the area at a very reasonable price. I then planted quick growing climbing plants. I'm not a great gardener so I cant remember what i had but ask at the garden centre they will advise you. But at least you have a barrier in place to minimize accidents.

I really like the clean lines of your kitchen , it's beautiful and I would not add to much colour but you could use some accessories with green and white that would compliment this minimalistic kitchen. For example adding a bright green plant/s or an accessory the same colour as the clock on your top wall can put everything in a nice perspective!

Hi minnie101, Thanks so much for your detailed reply. Great to know what colour that grey is. It may be a little dark with our floor. We will definitely update the handles - I hate the current ones. We'll probably go with wood to keep within budget. Your non-tiles pic is lovely. We'll probably keep some tiles and try to keep the kitchen a little more modern than country kitchen, which might be a challenge with wood. The room faces south. I like your idea of dividing it with paint. We probably will go with white in the kitchen and then 1/2 slightly darker tones in the tv-couch area. The 'other' entrance into the dining area is narrowed by a non-structural wall, so we should remove this to open it properly or like you say, close it off. Maybe not close it off entirely as we'd lose a lot of light, but maybe put in a counter or breakfast bar if space allowed. I love your pendant light suggestions over the dining table. Details like this and a rug in the couch area will really help divide the room as at the moment it is one big cavernous space. I really can't decide yet what way the couches should face - into a tv in the corner, or out into the room like you suggest. We'll have to draw out some chalk outlines on the floor and see how much space there actually is. Colour-wise we like the idea of keeping walls and cabinets quite stark, the wood counter will add a bit of warmth, and then adding colour with couches, rugs and possibly dining chairs. I've attached a couple of pieces of furniture I like. Some may not work, but we'll figure it out.

The tile is very pretty. I don't know if it is just the colours showing up differently on screen but the light grey appears to be a different tone (more purple to me) than your tile. If you want a light grey I would take the tile to the store and try for a better match. The dark color ties in nicely to the tile and could be very dramatic and stunning if the room gets a lot of light.

this is a hard one because as soon as you take it too the end of the bench top - it will look just as out of place with the upper cabinetry.

I think you'll need to decide which you can live with better. Maybe blu-tack some faux tiles up in line with the bench top and see if you like that any better than the way it currently is.

Tile guys said it's supposed to go to the cabinet but I think it looks odd.

I'm with your tile guy. I think it looks odd to go out beyond the upper cabinet and then have some weird cuts or bullnose attempt at the top.

There was an article and debate about this a few weeks ago and you always stop your backsplash with the end of the top cabinet! It just looks a little different because of how close the door frame is to the end of the cabinets.

Also, you can set something on the end of the counter there and forget all about it. It's really just fine.

As Bev said, there was similar dilemma a few weeks ago. End-of-cabinet carried the day, pros & homeowners alike.

it might help if you made the wall the same color as the tile, or less contrasting with it. the other possib. is to cut the countertop! :)

I think issue is minimized by fact coutertop ends at door casing. To me, it's like the countertop is supposed to end where it can go no farther & backsplash ends at cabs, both natural termination points. If countertop ended on open wall so it was sort of dangling in space w/ backsplash left behind at cabs it would be more of an eye-catcher.

It looks off because the edges are full size tiles and that forces the herringbone pattern to be cut off early. Can you use a thinner edge?

I think yours is in the right space now. It would look really awkward if it went with the counter. It would also leave the little sliver of wall paint between the door and the backsplash.

Professional tile setters say the way to do it is exactly as you have it--in line with the upper cabinets. Even if the upper and lower cabinets align, the countertop will always extend about 1-2" beyond.

I think it's fine and if you continue that pattern with that strip finish at the end you'd go to the door frame

Maybe a plant there so you don't look At it if it bothers you

I think that you were limited when the tile guy started the herringbone. Just love it for what it is, just lovely.

I think it's personal preference - if you went to end of counter-top, you would have a little floating corner. I have seen it end under the wall cabinet more often than not, in a situation like this.

Mine (not grouted yes) used the column as a natural boundary and we didn’t use bullnose on that side of the room. On the other side of the room, we ended with bullnose under cabinet.

For anyone interested in the final result here is my before and after. I don’t even notice the tile not extending to the counter. I think it turned out well.
