We are updating our newly aquired house and kitchen, built in 1995. We do t have the budget to change the floor tiles, but will update the splashback and have new kitchen cabinet doors. What colour should I do the splashback (we favour glass as a simple clean contrast to the floor tiles) and what colour and style should we do the kitchen cabinet door

Have you thought of re-doing the floor INSTEAD of the cupboard doors?

I think the floor is the most outdated.

I think it would update the kitchen more to have a new floor and maybe new handles on the cupboards. A floating wood floor would look fantastic.

Definitely glass splashback but otherwise I like kitchen as is. What colour roller blind are you putting in? What direction does window face? Depending upon natural light I'd go apple green or warm grey

thanks for your advice -Its facing south and may not put any blinds on - its faces a high walled private courtyard. like a lot of 90's homes both floor tiles and cabinets are a beige colour. was thinking off white matt colour cupboards with quaker style cupboards and white glass splashback to keep it light and accentuate with colour accessories. m

Hi Janis Unfortunately I am not in the Boston area - I live in Ireland! Yes there are red items in 3 of the main rooms, the kitchen, sitting room and tv room (library) - although we have pared those back now and it's not as overwhelming. thanks for all your help everyone, i really feel like it's made a big difference and am excited to finish the tv room and then refresh the play room. do you think I should move the piano to the sitting room? and would the jazz painting work in the tv room? speak later, thanks!

Hi catbox/emerald18 - your kitchen is absolutely stunning - I love it - mostly because your style is the same as mine - only the tiles I've chosen are Henley Cool from Topps Tiles (sage green/blue). I've also had a few moments of indecision but I've had a picture and sample of the tiles pinned up for months and I still love them. I'd chosen matt slab style kitchen door fronts but I might be convinced by your photo to change to Shaker. I am also going for the wood worktop but can't decide whether to have a Belfast sink or not. What sink did you choose? I also can't decide on a splashback, but like white painted brick + something more cleanable by the sink and hob. Once again, I love love love your kitchen - I'm pinning the photo of it up with my tiles picture in case I get future wobbles about my dream kitchen

Hi guys, Leelee we are definitely doing the vintage bits on the wall. We actually have some vintage cereal boxes that we are planning on displaying on the shelves (filled with cereal of course)!. Sarainitaly - I'm investigating thenIkea planner but it's painful to work (or maybe it's just me!). Here's a pic of the walls totally painted green now. Think the shelves will look great along with some pictures dotted around. It's the cabinets now that will b a pain! BTW it was pure enthusiasm that stopped me waiting until the water heater came off the wall to paint - lol. I will have to paint the patch when it's off.

Hi minnie101, Thanks so much for your detailed reply. Great to know what colour that grey is. It may be a little dark with our floor. We will definitely update the handles - I hate the current ones. We'll probably go with wood to keep within budget. Your non-tiles pic is lovely. We'll probably keep some tiles and try to keep the kitchen a little more modern than country kitchen, which might be a challenge with wood. The room faces south. I like your idea of dividing it with paint. We probably will go with white in the kitchen and then 1/2 slightly darker tones in the tv-couch area. The 'other' entrance into the dining area is narrowed by a non-structural wall, so we should remove this to open it properly or like you say, close it off. Maybe not close it off entirely as we'd lose a lot of light, but maybe put in a counter or breakfast bar if space allowed. I love your pendant light suggestions over the dining table. Details like this and a rug in the couch area will really help divide the room as at the moment it is one big cavernous space. I really can't decide yet what way the couches should face - into a tv in the corner, or out into the room like you suggest. We'll have to draw out some chalk outlines on the floor and see how much space there actually is. Colour-wise we like the idea of keeping walls and cabinets quite stark, the wood counter will add a bit of warmth, and then adding colour with couches, rugs and possibly dining chairs. I've attached a couple of pieces of furniture I like. Some may not work, but we'll figure it out.

Unfortunately I also think that you should update the floor. If you modernize the kitchen, it will make to floor look even more out of date.

If you don't have the budget to change the tiles, try re-grouting the tiles that you have. You'll be amazed at how a light grout will modernize the floor.

I agree that the floor is the problem. If you are short of cash, think about what your final aim is (a five-year plan?) and work towards that. Changing the cupboards and splash back are not going to have a big impact, as what you have is quite a classic look, but the floor is very ugly and outdated. No matter what you do or how much you spend, your kitchen will be dominated by the floor until you change it.

Timber would be great because it would add softness, warmth and texture to the space, but obviously it depends on what other flooring you have and what your long-term plans are.

Perhaps subway tiles would work as a splash back. To my eye glass would just look out of place with the style you have, plus it is expensive. You can buy lovely subway tiles very cheaply.

Changing out the cabinet doors, drawer fronts and end panels etc would add up to quite an expense especially if you want routed/shaker cabinetry. Have you had a quote for this? I think a new splash back and floor as has been suggested would be more beneficial to lift the look, as has been suggested. But perhaps the flooring continues through the rest of the living areas, hence the need to keep it for now? Refreshing the grout is a great idea. Are the cabinet fronts in good condition? If so, maybe see if you can find some new handles in a style that you like, new stools and even a (glass/hamptons style) pendant light. You could always make the more costly changes after doing this if you still aren't happy.

Yes you are all right the floor is the thing that is the most outdated - and yes it is throughout the living areas, hence the prohibitive expense. i am getting a quote tomorrow re replacing the front cabinet doors, but also get a quote to replace tiled floor. And when the horror of that amount sinks in, I will try re-grouting! Thanks everyone for your comments.

I have to agree and think that the money would be best spent on fixing the floor for now...an easy and cost effective option may be to overlay a forbu concrete looking floor like below:

How about getting rid of the wall cabinetry and replacing it with some open shelving for now (another cost effective solution- you can even get them from ikea) until you are ready to redo/replace your kitchen. Sometimes replacing the door fronts etc. is quite costly and you are still bound by the existing layout.

I think having a glass splash back in combination with the current floor tiles will likely look more dated.

I was going to suggest overlay for floor also. There are various types of flooring that can be laid over tiles, including wood. You may save by not having to rip tile out.

Thanks yes I have just priced some good quality commercial grade vinyl 'wood' large size planks that could overlay our tiles with minimal height difference (no need to rip out tiles saving $9000). To lay in all our living areas will be approx $10,000 (107 m2). Still waiting on quote to upgrade kitchen cabinet doors, but it might be similar cost. Should be able to make a descision end next week !

The vinyl planks will be a lot quieter and forgiving then tile. With the right underlay, it will also be kinder to your feet and joints.
