We are currently building a theatre similar to this one and have the steps and platforms built. This is exactly what we would like to do as the "trim" around the steps.
That is 1x6 poplar with a routed edge, my carpenter then micro pined a moulding to the underside about 3/4" out from the platform wall allowing room for the rope light. The mounts for the lighting should be attached before the 1x6 is installed. Hope this helps, good luck! ~Ben Denlinger VP
Sorry for the late response, but it just depends on the lighting being used and the size of the bottom moulding. I think we were around 1 1/4-1 1/2" overhang
