Help reinvigorate this tired looking garden

Would really appreciate any help with this as my eye for design when it comes to outdoor spaces is limited!!.

I recently bought a house and whilst we have the inside exactly how we'd like it we haven't even started on the garden but very much would like to make use of this great space.

The garden its self is currently made up of 4 sections, closest to the house a decking area (we'd like to keep), then the large grass area, thirdly is a bit of a waste line and finally there is a paved area at the back.

Either way me and my partner are would ideally like a modern and sleek design which maximises the space and is relatively low maintenance to maintain.

Thanks in advance for any help, suggestions or tips.

Hi Nick, long gardens such as these need to be broken up a bit to make them more interesting. I suggest putting in some kind of hedge right across the whole width of the garden about two thirds of the way down, with an arch just to the left or right of the centre. This makes you want to go through to discover what lies beyond, and somehow makes the garden look bigger. You can use this second part of the garden for planting - the separation will allow you to try a different style to the top. Or you can use it to hide a shed and for storage, or a play area if you have children. If you were a keen gardener I'd suggest using it for a veg patch and cutting garden. Without knowing which way your garden faces or the climate and soil, I can't suggest any particular plants, however I'd suggest going for a selection of evergreen shrubs and perennials. The evergreen shrubs will provide elegant structure all year round and will only need clipping once or twice a year, and the perennials will mostly look after themselves - apart from dividing them up every few years when they get too big. That's about as low maintenance as you can get! For the hedge I'd go for a flowering evergreen hedge - something like Viburnum or Choisya would be really pretty to look out on in the late winter and early spring, before the summer perennial flowers are out. Have fun planting - the blank canvas is very exciting. I'd be happy to suggest more plants with a bit more info on the site.

I got one of those men who cares about EVERYTHING!! LOL Sometimes I wish he was like "most"....I'd have more butterflies myself. ;) We got a Rottie girl....we've rescued Great Danes for over 15 years but they just do not live very long....it's too hard....so we switched breeds. I am so tired.... Ok back to this room.....I'd like to know what you like poster....traditional....contemporary....want a theme like travel? Floral? Butterflies ;)??

not alot happening at the moment, its winter! alotta rain, lotta. but i am bedding down to get this over with and maybe in the spring the spirits will rise once more. i hope so. i would love to feel i was doing something to keep my hopes and dreams alive, i dont see what i can do until the spring. when i bring the topic up, especially to those that moved away and came down this neck of the woods, they say they had friends who felt it was too far too and moved back home. i guess thats how i feel, thats what i want and i just want to be a bit more uplifted, i think rain dampens down things a bit!!! santa Ma Margaret!

Lovely, much better than the 3D plan. V glad you kept your patterned floor tiles, I really like them. It's all come together very attractively. The only thing I'd change and this is just because I'm a colour freak is the pendants - I'd probably have made those red and orange or something. But congrats really, it looks great.

Hello Houzz Ireland, We are currently renovating a 1960's build - so as you know, there is a lot of decisions to be made!! So it would be nice to get some gems of advice from the experts to help us through this daunting task. Areas where we would really like some inspiration for - small bathroom downstairs. I would really like to do something fun with this room and although small, I think it could work really well with some funky wallpaper or possibly tiles?! I'm just not sure what to do with it. Also - pulling a whole house together?! Where do we start? We have the bigger pieces of furniture but how do I know what nest of tables goes best with a suite? Or what accessories will bring a room together? I'm due a second baby in 2 weeks time so any help at this stage would be so amazing - to guide me on the right interior design path for our new house.
