Cracked kitchen cabinet doors

We had our kitchen cabinets installed about a year ago (whole house was renovated about a month before the cabinets were installed). 5 month after the cabinets were installed, we ordered another cabinet from same company(same design, same paint).

About 6 months after the first batch of cabinets were installed, we started noticed cracks on the doors on the first batch. It might happened earlier. We were busy with out door renovations, we might just missed them. Some of them are hairline cracks, but some of them are very severe. Like the crack shows in this picture, it is as wide as 2 mm and I can see the joint.

No matter the doors have big or small cracks, all the doors expended. As show in this picture, they expended more in the middle and less on the edge. There are 2 doors I can not close because they are too tight.

The second batch of the cabinets look fine until now.

We contacted the cabinet company. They said they ordered the doors from a big local company. The door company start to say it is all because the "dramatic humidity change at customer home".

We have a humidifier and the humidity was kept around 40% -45% during the winter. I renovated the whole house and all the solid wood floor, baseboard, door/window frame and doors (including those at kitchen) have no cracks or noticeable expansion. Consider the money we spent on the renovation, we definitely tried to maintain everything in a good condition.

Can any one provide any suggestion how this happened and how should I deal with the cabinet door company?

the miter split is not totally uncommon. the cabinet co since itbis still fairly new should replace them. however, with a paint and a glaze the color may not match exactly anymore because of agine. in this case it can be carefully gkued and clamped. it also sounds like you need to adjust some of the hinges. These things do happen so dont fret to much. look at the hinge-there should be tiny + screws these will adjust the door up/down, in/out .

Thank you so much for the reply. But there is no space to move the doors around. Either the doors expanded too much, or the original size is too large.

Thanks folks.. The unit doors are solid pine and the ceiling is red deal..( hope that's the correct spelling!) It's a cosy space but a little dark I think, if not too overbearing with all the wood..

Lighting help for kitchen diner

We are in the process of renovating our kitchen, including knocking through into the dining room and adding french doors from the dining room to the garden. It's west facing and doesn't get huge amounts of sunlight. I'm trying to figure out what to do about lighting. We have 3 pendants that will go over the peninsula but otherwise no lighting decisions - although as we are redoing the ceiling, recessed spots seem like a good idea. The kitchen cabinets will be pale grey high gloss, with an oak worktop. Other than the oven cabinet and the freezer/fridge/pantry wall, there are no high cabinets. My main issues are: where to place spots centre light in dining area: we tend to move the table depending on season/events/mood so don't necessarily want to be stuck with a pendant light that only works best directly above the table do I need spots interspersed with the pendants over the peninsula (they are heavy ceramic so will likely not cast much ambient light). It will be my main baking/food prep area so light will be important. (General plan of kitchen - not entirely to scale but gives a good idea of plans. About 30 sq m in total - the long wall with window and french doors is about 7 m)

damage to door on integrated dishwasher

Hello all, Being at home means seeing all the issues emerging from a recent reno. One glaring one is the water/steam damage to the door just above the dials of an integrated dishwasher. The kitchen is about a year old and the door is crumbling. It’s laminate I think and I can see what looks like particle board under. It’s swelling and cracking. it could be something different but you should be able to move the door out with the hinge. frequently, there is adjustment to pull the door away or closer to the frame. this can give it the fraction of an inch it needs to swing. It wouldn't move the door to the left or right any or up or down, so it shouldn't be needing any additional space. Full overlay doors hinges are made to opperate within their own door thickness for this exact reason. take a picture and post a door that wont open. Maybe I can help tell you for sure. Frequently, the cabinetry problems are easy install adjustments, not actual cabinet flaws. (which is waay cheaper too)

Check your humidifier with an independent hygrometer. It doesn't appear to be working. It appears that your home is severely dry. Call out your HVAC person.

1. I will try to use a different hydrometer. But all my other woodwork including cabinets and shelves in washroom and living room are perfect fine. All the renovation were done about the same time.
