I think your colors are restful so I would work with those and not pop a color. Maybe some interesting artwork that had some color in it, but I think you should go for a more elegant calm look. By the way, I like the chandelier you have with the fireplace. I think I would paint the lower part of your wall the same blue as is in the top part. Then I would add some black accents in glass and lamps. Curtains that have a sheen or gold thread would be nice.

Thank you all for replying and for your advice! I will certainly consider changing the lamps for taller ones. They are very low all right. General feeling seems to be that mirror would be better same colour as the fireplace so I will think about that (it was originally that colour but I thought it looked very dark LOL). I might move it to my bedroom, I have a space where it might work. I will try centring the rug also. Lots to consider, I appreciate the comments everyone!

In theory I would recommend the console table to be longer than the mirror. At least 15cm either side. The mirror might look top heavy over a small console table. It also depends on the style of the mirror how ornate/simple it is...do you have an image of the mirror and table?

There are a thousand ways to use mirrors beautifully in a living room -- just not any old mirror in any old place, that I would agree with I think you should have art over the fireplace, and I see potential for using a scattering of small mirrors to bring light into the alcove and counterbalance the somewhat awkward angle of the TV. I'm assuming there's nowhere else to put the TV? I agree that the furniture in that corner is rather too flimsy to handle either the size of the TV or the bold black boxes of the fireplace and hearth. How about a striking floor vase?
