How do I co-ordinate my living room with this wallpaper seem to have a lot of the same colour
Comments (20)HI -- Well the wallpaper was just done so there is no changing that , soooo I think you should paint the rest of that wall the same white as the white background of the wallpaper and paint fireplace mantel too. Then have two small matching cabinets painted the blue from the paper or the leaf color placed on each side of the fireplace. . Then have white or glass shelves above , maybe three is best . Now the rest of the room painted the exact color of your sofa . Because the room looks small I think it would look best to have the sofa blend into the walls color wise. Now just keep some of your room accents in the blue color but not too much. Remember not to clutter the shelves and if you don't want the shelves then have a large painting on each side and have a big round mirror over the mantel and keep the small items off the mantel and onto the side cabinets ....See MoreWhat colour to paint the bricks and mantle piece on fireplace
Comments (4)Hi, this is a tricky one! I tell you the trend for 'grey's is frying my brain cell currently! It's very hard to make greys go with brown's because in a nutshell, they don't. Grey is a cool colour and brown is warm. Therefore, trying to get the mix right is a nightmare. If you're stuck on the midnight silver, which is a pretty colour, i'd probably have to go with painting the fireplace in the same, midnight silver, but darkening down the alcoves with a darker yet warm grey. Go for the same darker grey on the mantle shelf itself. The bricks would also have to be very dark, as painted bricks can look a little weird. When i paint bricwork, i choose not to paint the grouting. Instead i get a big pallette of similar looking colours, matchpots are good for this because you can buy 6 or 7 for a pound each at B&Q, then i stipple the paint onto the bricks so that they aren't one uniform colour, i've painted concrete to look like brick in this manner, it's very effective. If I were you i'd go for grey tones on the wall that look more taupe as they will sit better with your flooring which is a lovely warm tone. By going with the 'is it grey / is it taupe' colour scheme you will not end up with the cool greys competing with the floor....See MoreWhat should we do with this fireplace?
Comments (9)That's a working fireplace isn't it? I agree that the fire surround is probably not in keeping with your tastes and would probably look perfectly at home in a rustic country cottage, but just not for you. There are several options open to you, and if your a bit handy with the DIY, none of them need to cost much, it's just a little hard work. Remove the fire surround and see what dimensions you have with the actual fireplace, it might be that you can also remove the iron plate around it, thus leaving you with a much smaller actual fire. However, be aware that it will affect, the plaster, the skirting and the hearth, as everything is currently built to home the fire surround. You could go............at that point for making good the walls and keep it simple by having a floating shelf only, or another fire surround that's simpler. Loads on Ebay! Just make sure they're suitable for a working fire!...See MoreInjecting life into open plan
Comments (9)I hadn't spotted it was mahogany tbh when I first looked! I probably wouldn't go for a light wood with the mahogany, perhaps something medium in tone rather than mahogany just to balance out with the rest of the room? You could of course go for a different material for the console and add wood for accessories. For the bookcases I might actually paint them in the ŵall colour or the White otherwise they might overpower that area and the fire? Another option is to paint the actual fire surround. If you decided on blue for an accent colour for example you could paint it an Inky blue. It's quite hard to say without knowing what/if you'll bring colour to the rest of the room as you could end up with a living area dark in tone and everything else very light. The bookcases will also visually widen the living space so you may find you also need side tables for the sofa to balance it (or a chair angled in front of the bookcase if it fits) but perhaps see how it looks first before making any decisions! Art or mirror over the fire would work but I think art for colour/pattern....See MoreRina
