What colour to paint the bricks and mantle piece on fireplace

I am wondering what colour to paint the bricks on the fireplace and the mantlepiece which is a large piece of wood painted back at present. The walls are midnight silver from colour trend. The room is small enough as it's a country cottage. I'd appreciate your ideas on this.

Sounds interesting, pictures would really help as it's very difficult to imagine. Not sure at the moment why you'd want to paint the brickwork in a cottage, so will definately need a picture please x

HI -- Well the wallpaper was just done so there is no changing that , soooo I think you should paint the rest of that wall the same white as the white background of the wallpaper and paint fireplace mantel too. Then have two small matching cabinets painted the blue from the paper or the leaf color placed on each side of the fireplace. . Then have white or glass shelves above , maybe three is best . Now the rest of the room painted the exact color of your sofa . Because the room looks small I think it would look best to have the sofa blend into the walls color wise. Now just keep some of your room accents in the blue color but not too much. Remember not to clutter the shelves and if you don't want the shelves then have a large painting on each side and have a big round mirror over the mantel and keep the small items off the mantel and onto the side cabinets .

Snan, The bottom oval one in Eskandari's photos would also work in your room (or something like that). The oval shape visually gives height to the room which would work for you as well. I know that shopping around can sometimes be exhausting, but if you were up for the search that would be another option if you're not sure about the round one you have already. I would also look for something that combines the elements of your wallpaper as well as your fireplace (if you are not planning on changing it) in order to bring those together, i.e. try to bring in the color tones of the two.

The protruding wall around the fireplace needs to be wallpapered or painted with dense motifs or tiled with stone/brick textured tiles or ply. Re-doing your fireplace will drastically change the look of your living room. See photos below. Consider painting the frames of your doors and sliding doors in the living room and kitchen a dark brown to match the floating shelf over the fireplace. Do not decide what you want to do in poor lighting as you have provided in the photos. Wine is a good color to consider. Also think of darker colors like plum and have different shades on each wall (from the same color family). So maybe think of wine- plum- magenta or wine - oxblood-blood red, etc. whichever suits your taste.

Hi Jonathan. You're right that the chimney breast needs "defining" in some way. In terms of painting, the only way I would go is white, or a a couple of shades lighter or darker than the wall colour -- particularly looking at your ideabook, which shows an inclination towards a kind of spare, airy elegance. You can happily use navy for accents in the room, if you like the idea. But I do agree that looking for a large artwork would be the first thing to do. Find something you love, in the first place -- and if it has a touch of the colour of the brick, so much the better. I love your dramatic fireplace, and the way the wood of the fireplace works with the cabinet. Go with the instincts you show in your ideabook.

I've changed the doors to white shaker frosted glass doors so it's modern yet still shabby chic!! I'm at a, loss as to whether I should paint the mantlepiece as walls are midnight silver and white skirting.

Hi, this is a tricky one! I tell you the trend for 'grey's is frying my brain cell currently! It's very hard to make greys go with brown's because in a nutshell, they don't. Grey is a cool colour and brown is warm. Therefore, trying to get the mix right is a nightmare. If you're stuck on the midnight silver, which is a pretty colour, i'd probably have to go with painting the fireplace in the same, midnight silver, but darkening down the alcoves with a darker yet warm grey. Go for the same darker grey on the mantle shelf itself. The bricks would also have to be very dark, as painted bricks can look a little weird. When i paint bricwork, i choose not to paint the grouting. Instead i get a big pallette of similar looking colours, matchpots are good for this because you can buy 6 or 7 for a pound each at B&Q, then i stipple the paint onto the bricks so that they aren't one uniform colour, i've painted concrete to look like brick in this manner, it's very effective. If I were you i'd go for grey tones on the wall that look more taupe as they will sit better with your flooring which is a lovely warm tone. By going with the 'is it grey / is it taupe' colour scheme you will not end up with the cool greys competing with the floor.
