Small downstairs toilet & shower - are my ideas gonna work?
Hi there,
We just moved into our forever home and have lots of work to do - exciting times... we are about to embark on a renovation downstairs - including our tiny, smelly, badly ventilated downstairs toilet & shower.
It's 2m x 1.8m.
The plan
- Upgrade toilet, sink, and install floor level shower with glass panel
- Put small window 400 x500 over the toilet so I can still have a mirror over the sink
- Dark grey hex mosaic on the floor & couple of flowers to break it up
- Walls will be white subway & grey grout - only plan to tile halfway up the walls except where shower is - that will be fully tiled
- Wooden shelf stretching over toilet & sink

So will it all come together?
The subway tiles are either 10x20cm or 10x30cm.. and the floor is a hex mosiac.. will the small tiles work in a small space.. I heard a rumour about using large tiles in a small room..

From houzz pictures, it looks as though you could extend the Juliet floor out and then add a roof but a builder would have to figure that one out. You could have another roof line on the side and have your porch there and access it from inside, which might turn out even better as you would have a great summer entertaining spot. Comments (16)About your plumber saying "plumb layout is confirmed". That is a load of rubbish. It's fairly easy to move drains around (yes he might have to rip up some walls, but he can also do off-the-wall installations to avoid that). In a small bath proper placement is of the utmost importance!!! If you have the bathtub and shower next to each other that will be much better and then the glass separator idea should work. padmaramachandran's (see post above) setup sounds more reasonable to me as well (see first picture below). This is similar to your setup but as you have more space you could put in bath tub and shower where the picture only shows a bath tub. Also if you do it that way you could theoretically have a bidet or a wider wash basin (small double perhaps too). Example layout: Do you need a bathtub in the guest bath? If not you have a lot more room to work with. E.g. for a double wash basin and large walking shower and a bidet (2nd picture). Example of off-the-wall installation for toilet and bidet and a large walking shower. Finally if you ignore this advice and do it the way you planned ;) then I suggest you really thing about that glass separator. Doing it right will make a lot of difference (see 3rd picture). I like your concept and the fact that you have also created a moodboard. This allows you to avoid mistakes and unnecessary money spending.I like the mosaic tile you have picked, yes the rumour is true, large tiles make the space look bigger. How do you like the flooring on the first three images? I very much like the third image with the black and white mosaics. I think the overall look of that bathroom is stylish, neat and tidy. Also, the tiles give depth to the room.
For lightning up the space or making it look bigger, you can go for bigger mirror. On the first image below I love this industrial style bathroom with the 3 set of mirrors.
