Please! Backsplash help for contemporary white/grey kitchen
Hello Houzz Fans - I could really use your advice. We designed a new kitchen without including our decision on backsplash! :(. Now, we want to add backsplash tile on one wall--the one with the range/fridge only, and are conflicted on what to do. Should we stick with white? Or should we go with something that picks up the grey (earthy) in the bottom cabinets? You can see in the bottom photo two colors that we were looking at. (Afraid the color on left could be too dark). Really I just need any feedback suggestions I can get! We were looking at large subway tile, but thought we should get away from the vertical pattern theme that already exists in the bottom cabinets and wood floors. I have an example of a new design concept that I can share as well. Would love your suggestions!

8 years agoYeah, that would be great -- not adding another color (other than via grout) but adding some pattern to bounce off all the planes. Overall, I'd stay away from the dark, so if you decide against the above, I'd either look for a very pale gray (or a white with gray or sea glass overtones) or go for some texture rather than color -- a little sparkle or some 3-dimensionality -- this one is from Daltile:

Comments (18)I would still do an island. You have the space. I hate having my stove against the wall. You get boxed in and forget about two people working at once. How about stove in island, fridge all the way down to the right? You don't want the fridge to interrupt work space. You will end up w two too-small spaces instead of one nice functional one. We had an island with a downdraft Jenn-air stove-worked quite well for most needs....See Moremy dated kitchen please help
Comments (8)Hello Oris1978, What I would start with is painting the walls... Try a really lovely chalky cream.. Little Greene do a nice one called whitening.. It is bright and chalky and much nicer than a plain white.. Then get some nice roller blinds (for budget) Also in a light colour cream or white or something to compliment any flooring you might get... I see you don't want to spend a lot but I want to suggest a flooring. The tiles are not bad but if they are damaged then I would suggest a Lino. May not be exciting you think but when you have looked at the options from Sinclair Till, I think you will change your mind.. Images attached... There are many and I have chosen a few really fantastic designs along with a plainer one, so you get the idea. The floor space is quite big so make the most of that... Move the table and chairs further into the centre of the room... I'd even suggest painting them as well...Take the sofa out of the kitchen and move the other table to where the sofa is, if it's a table.. Can't quite tell? I'd place the items like toaster and kettle nearer so they are grouped together, thus more practical... Maybe invest in something that isn't white. I have to say one of the best investments for the kitchen has to be a Dualit toaster in Chrome! It's a style beauty! A good kettle to go with it and you're set. Dualit does a good kettle too I think it's called Architect? It too is chrome **If floor tiles are good then blinds to match in a sheer fabric not blackout as sheer is lighter and more subtle... The painting... it's lonely! Get something else or move it to a smaller piece of wall... It's really too small in that location... Box in the meter and those bits and all is neat, paint the same colour as the walls.. Voila! : ))...See Moreback splash/ tiling
Comments (12)Don't be swerved away from hand painted tiles! The best way to add colour and originality (I make hand painted tiles so I may be biased). I would take the tiles to just under the bottom shelf, and up to the hod. We have had tiles behind our cooker for 21 years, and we don't find the grout staying clean a problem. By the way - I think subway tiles will look dated in a few years, as anything bang on trend tends to do....See More

8 years agoI like your idea of mixing up the linear and I like the tile you are considering. I also like this one as it looks organic. But what does "bother" me a bit is the brick wall. I'm not sure the fun pattern backsplash will look good with the linear, rustic brick wall? I'd consider painting the brick white too, It seems a bit out of place with your modern kitchen (but may work with the rest of the home??)

8 years agoI personally think glass tile back splash is the way to go with this one. Blacks and greys would really compliment the nicely white cabinets.

8 years agoI really think you should consider white or marble penny tiles for your space....it would look amazing!
I agree with adding some industrial element....maybe in your lighting.

My two cents are a white subway tile backsplash. This kitchen has the glossy beveled glass subway tile which would look very nice in your kitchen too. Add color and interest with a nice glass tile over the stove
