HELP! Not sure what to do nice but 'blah' bathroom
We just bought a new house and while we like the master bathroom - there is something 'blah' about it. We don't have a lot of money for major renovations, but any thoughts and/or suggestions are welcome! I was thinking we could paint the walls, paint the vanities, change hardware, etc? Just not sure what color to choose since the tile and countertops are all a light cream/beige.

8 years agoNothing wrong with all white bathrooms. I would not paint vanities. Look at putting some art behind tub. Everyone with a tub like yours seems to have a window since you don't have one, maybe a pretend one? Or a door?
Paint the walls a tone from the paintings, or leave as is and bring in accessories from the painting. Towels, rugs

Comments (11)Sure you can, we do it all the time in rental properties. Old houses have windows in the showers and renters do not take care of tile. You just need the right saw and then tub trim. Not everyone can tile- it takes a lot of patience and a tile saw. And if you are not a DIYer naturally it can be a big mess. We have done a lot of repairs to walls from botched tile jobs. And hiring out is expensive. You say you have a small budget. Chances are with the look of the tile in the pic- you may have water damage already. Comments (22)I'm pretty sure they will have been put in to provide a non-combustable zone behind and around the stove. We are about to install a wood burning stove and the installation instructions specify an area that needs to be heat resistant. Removing or even painting them behind the stove would be difficult and potentially dangerous. I would either paint the rest of the chimney breast a dark green to reduce the impact of the tiles, or add a fire surround (checking with the manufacturer or a reputable installer about clearance) and some painted tongue and groove cladding over the chimney breast depending on your preferred style....See MoreNeed some ideas for my bathroom

As a pro I wonder if you could offer your thoughts on a couple of scenarios 1 - Leave bath where it is - what would be involved in moving the shower 4-6 inches to the centre of the bath? I did consider the P shaped bath and will consider your suggestion for a shorter bath to allow room for the toilet, but I currently had to put in a door stop to protect the shower door from the entrance door handle and I would be concerned about a rounded door being even closer. If I left the bath where it is I have a couple of options, turning the toilet and cistern 90 degrees to the adjoining wall - see above for the considerations there, or I have also considered switching the toilet and sink. I would put the sink facing the wall where the cistern currently is have a large-ish vanity from the base of the bath to the wall, and the if the toilet was where the sink is it would not interfere with the doors for the hot press as the seat would be considerably lower than the sink is currently thus giving me the better access I want. In this scenario the main issue for me would be the toilet would be facing the entrance door, a bit unsightly but if it gave me the space I want I think I could live with the compromise. 2 - A bit more involved, but I have also considered moving the bath sideways along the short length of the room, shower end over the space where the cistern is currently and moving the sink and toilet to the space where the bath is currently. I think this would allow me room for a vanity and maybe also a tall storage cupboard for the towels and linens currently in the hot press. The obvious concern with this is the shower spray in the direction of the hot press, if I got the storage I needed elsewhere in the bathroom I wouldn't be concerned about those getting wet, but would want to ensure I don't end up with a leak over the stairs. Access would also be an issue if repairs were required for the shower pump or the hot water system. You would have to step into the bath to gain access. Comments (30)Hi! What was your final decision? I am also working on my tiny WC and came to the following conclusions (after 2 months spent in tile shops, looking through houzz and pinterest photos). The tiles in small spaces: 1. Should reflect. The space should not be matt and absorb the light. The glazed tile reflects the objects like a mirror and creates depth. 2. Should not be oversized. When you like the big tiles on the photo you posted - just adore them at the picture. they will not go to a tine space. Compare the size of the bathroom and the size of the tile. Try to imagine the pattern. 3. Don't be mislead by professional designs and photos (like the ones you posted and you like). Most of them are the bathrooms which are really huge in size. So the tiles that are on the picture will not go for your project. You want a small SPA oasis? Forget about concrete and metal look and all the things like that. I took a sample of concrete tile in my bath... really you feel uncomfortable, when you step on the concrete barefoot, Though I have floor heating , I wouldn't go barefoot. Its concrete!:))) Concrete is good for a big loft or industrial design, I think. 5. For a SPA - look I would opt either for the mosaic (which is classical for SPA, but be careful with that. May be monochromatic or achromatic) or wood optic tiles combined with warm white tones. 6. Much color in small bathrooms is not a good option. It is better to add it with accessories. Moreover you can change the look just by replacing your turqoise towels by grey ones. You can add dynamics only by choosing not a typical size of the white tile and making an interesting pattern. For example, for my tiny WC i have 25x75 cm tiles and will put them in a brick wall style. What I have chosen for my tiny WC is a wood optic (very light) tile for the floor and white tiles for the walls. They will cover the wall by 120 cm. 8 years agoI, too, thought about mirror behind tub, but nixed that as I would not want that image staring at me when I stood up. :>) There are mirrors shaped like windows and a chandelier is a great addition. I think there are rules for not hanging over tub but just outside the tub area. Blues and whites would be nice here, fixtures are chrome so even a lighter teal color.

8 years agoAgree you need to figure out which direction you want to go in. You have a beautiful space that just needs some personality. Try adding rugs, towels, other accessories, and either a picture or large round mirror behind the tub. I think you can either paint the vanities or leave as is, but I would definitely change the hardware. They don't seem to fit in with the rest of the space. The wall color is nice and neutral and works well with the floors, but if you like more color, you could definitely paint the walls. Found this picture and thought it may help. Look at lots of pictures of bathrooms on Houzz to get ideas of what you love and what direction you want to take.

8 years agoYes, you need to paint the vanities white. But for me what throws the space off is the bathtub. It should be the center of interest. Most photos of freestanding tubs have them in front of beautiful window...
You need something behind the tub for interest and something close to hold the soap, shampoo, towels. Add a narrow ledge behind or something close by. Add something behind: could be framed wallpaper or tile or art or a screen.

8 years agoIf it is in your budget, a wainscot will help protect the wall and add interest. If the wainscot was cream, you could paint the wall above blue gray. Blues, tans, whites and wood go together, so you would not have to paint the vanities if you did not want to.

8 years agoI would tile the wet wall. Maybe in a mosaic. Something that looks organic. Porcelanosa Tile would carry something that would work well. You could also use a basic crown with a Base cap on the ceiling. Paint the ceiling 10% of the wall color. Paint the crown about 4-6" of ceiling then base cap all white to tie them together. I usually like to go with decorator or white dove on trim, depending on the wall color. By doing this you give the room depth and it gives the illusion of taller ceilings.

7 years agolast modified: 7 years agoThat is a very strange bathroom you have there. They've broken up the vanity leaving one in the corner all alone and lonely!
I think beadboard wainscotting would be a good option. It would help right behind the tub to seem to anchor it in place. Right now the tub looks a little lonely. Maybe install something like this.
The beadboard can be painted to match the countertops. It would sort of join them together. The walls don't have to be green, but that would be better than the neutral color you have now. For the wall above the tub, perhaps this. (But with the wainscotting not as high.) Put hangars for robes and towels, perhaps.

You could certainly opt for brighter colors or a different arrangement.
I'd suggest a table beside the tub for shampoo, etc and a rug. This would add more color. But if I were you and I could afford it, I would replace those dated countertops and fixtures!!! Like this:
I think these colors would go well with your shower area you have now. Blue and green can be calming colors in the bathroom.
