I'd look for something that looks great with the irisses in the windows, the colors at least. Something Art Nouveau or Art Deco, botanical, floral. Metallic silver/beige will reflect lots of light. But I would leave the low stairs' walls (rail) as they are (painted offwhite) and only paper on the high wall leading up and the wall without stairs (opposite side). If the wall is in good shape, no need for complete paneling, just use a chair rail and paper the part above it. Or do you want planks/panels to show?

What a wonderful hall looks fantastic. For the carpet I would (budget allowing) use chrome or brass stair rods on each stair would look brilliant in there. You could always get an old or cheap console table & paint it yourself in silver or bronze etc.

Hi. Have you ever considered a real interesting eye catching piece of art work to really brighten up an area, I think a select piece of art would really make the space stand out, add interest, colour, texture and add a great talking point to the room.... I painted that one area and then just lost steam....only looking at it again now. I do like the idea of dark & light but kittihawke you are right about being careful with it. The only thing I've noticed if you break the grey with strong bright white it looks fantastic so I might hand a number of white frames in the hall, stairs & landing.
