DIY Kitchen Refresh (just until we gut it!)

We moved into a 1958 split-level home last July. It had been a rental house for many years, and was in terrible shape. While my husband and stepson tore out the disgusting smoke-filled carpets, and painted every single square inch with 2 coats of primer and 2 coats of paint, I got busy on the sad, sad kitchen. The kitchen was mostly original! From 1958! The cabinets had 5 coats of paint on them, which I stripped 4-5 times each, over several days. 27 doors and drawers. I then sanded them, primed them, painted them, and replaced the hardware (with the exception of the hinges, which are some non-standard size). My stepson ripped out the built in stove, rewired the outlet, and we put in a free standing range off of Craigslist. My husband cut into the top cabinet and found a pre-existing duct for a vent hood. I sanded and painted all the cabinet boxes, removed years of petrified contact paper. I found a tooth on one shelf. So gross. So here are the pictures. This is a stop gap kitchen, until we gut it, which will be soon, I hope. The counters and floors are still awful, but the rest perked up a bit! I did this in 6 days (while grandma took the kids, bless her heart!).

Comments (33)Hi catbox/emerald18 - your kitchen is absolutely stunning - I love it - mostly because your style is the same as mine - only the tiles I've chosen are Henley Cool from Topps Tiles (sage green/blue). I've also had a few moments of indecision but I've had a picture and sample of the tiles pinned up for months and I still love them. I'd chosen matt slab style kitchen door fronts but I might be convinced by your photo to change to Shaker. I am also going for the wood worktop but can't decide whether to have a Belfast sink or not. What sink did you choose? I also can't decide on a splashback, but like white painted brick + something more cleanable by the sink and hob. Comments (27)Hi guys, Leelee we are definitely doing the vintage bits on the wall. We actually have some vintage cereal boxes that we are planning on displaying on the shelves (filled with cereal of course)!. Sarainitaly - I'm investigating thenIkea planner but it's painful to work (or maybe it's just me!). Here's a pic of the walls totally painted green now. Think the shelves will look great along with some pictures dotted around. It's the cabinets now that will b a pain! BTW it was pure enthusiasm that stopped me waiting until the water heater came off the wall to paint - lol. Comments (11)Hi PCmom, sstarr and lefty47. Thanks a million for the comments and views. I'm taking it all on board. PCmom I like the frosted glass idea but I think it will block too much light. We are actually thinking of doing this though in our front sitting room as the window is floor to ceiling. Love the recycled lumber idea and it looks great in the photo - think my husband is hell bent on steel shelving though. sstarr - I'm gonna have a look at your profile pics now but I don't think we will have enough wall space for floor to ceiling pantry. lefty47 we are keeping the appliances for now. It is only the oven - its not the prettiest but its functional and we will most definitely get a new fitted one in the future. There are a few other pictures there of the room around and the left wall - can you not see them? If not I can try and add them again. I'm glad you liked the toilet paper. It took me ages to decide where to place that! What does everyone think about colours of the cabinets? I think we might go for a neutral tone on the wall (unless anyone can visualise anything better?) and either with the steel shelving or possibly the recycles ,lumber idea from PCmom? Comments (4)The back splash is certainly taste specific. If you are going to remodel in the spring, I certainly wouldn't spend a lot though. I have never done this myself, but I am pretty sure you can paint the tiles. That would be a huge improvement. Here is a blog that addresses that project. 8 years agoThought I'd update my post and let you all know that we had an accidental remodel right before Thanksgiving :)
We replaced the countertops, which precipitated replacing the sink, faucet and tile backsplash along with all the light fixtures and outlets. Then we added some shelves and art, and I made some little valances. Having all the extra counter space is AWESOME.
