How to finish this kitchen off (and maybe insert some more colour)?
Am in the middle of redecorating the kitchen. It was rather overdue.
Before:
Current:
I've replaced the lights, extended the tiling of the backsplash, rejigged the cabinets to complete the run along the window, and built a cupboard around the ASHP, but the main job has been the walls, which I've stripped and papered and just painted the first coat. It's a lemon white.
Questions:
- Is it too acidic?
- What colour for the unit ends and cupboards? (My original plan was to paint them in a silver bilberry, to tone with the counters and floor, but I'm not sure if sticking with the lemon would be better, and less overwhelming.
- Where else can I add colour please or improve it? I'll be reinstalling the blinds and architrave around the windows once I've finished painting.

Any thoughts gratefully appreciated, thank you. It's the first room as you open the door (which I plan to replace for something more secure), so I'd like to get it right.

Comments (7)This is a very small and dark kitchen I would defo change the colour of the units to an antique cream and the worktop a darker colour maybe walnut and paint those double doors and the window sill white to match the other wood work also get a smaller round table it would give you more floor space the chairs you have would still work and maybe add some splashes of acidy colours lime green/orange or yellows not too much just a few touches. also Jacksplash is correct about the blind if you are keeping a blind go for a straight edge one. if your budget allows I would also change the sink to a white sink it really reflex light from the window and brightens the room I did something the same with my own sink it doesn't have to be a Belfast sink you can get the same sink as you already have in white ceramic....See MorePaint colour advice for semi open plan kitchen/living area
Comments (4)Hi I notice your blind and lamp are Laura Ashley Pelham. Laura Ashley does a duck egg white, pale duck egg and duck egg paint colours. Maybe you could have the duck egg white as the predominant colour and use in both rooms but also use the pale duck egg or duck egg in the lounge, or add some wallpaper. Comments (4)Hi minnie101, Thanks so much for your detailed reply. Great to know what colour that grey is. It may be a little dark with our floor. We will definitely update the handles - I hate the current ones. We'll probably go with wood to keep within budget. Your non-tiles pic is lovely. We'll probably keep some tiles and try to keep the kitchen a little more modern than country kitchen, which might be a challenge with wood. The room faces south. I like your idea of dividing it with paint. We probably will go with white in the kitchen and then 1/2 slightly darker tones in the tv-couch area. The 'other' entrance into the dining area is narrowed by a non-structural wall, so we should remove this to open it properly or like you say, close it off. Maybe not close it off entirely as we'd lose a lot of light, but maybe put in a counter or breakfast bar if space allowed. I love your pendant light suggestions over the dining table. Details like this and a rug in the couch area will really help divide the room as at the moment it is one big cavernous space. I really can't decide yet what way the couches should face - into a tv in the corner, or out into the room like you suggest. We'll have to draw out some chalk outlines on the floor and see how much space there actually is. Colour-wise we like the idea of keeping walls and cabinets quite stark, the wood counter will add a bit of warmth, and then adding colour with couches, rugs and possibly dining chairs. Comments (4)Hello trifides, What about chrome? Good at reflecting light.. A dual fuel Smeg range for example... A Dualit chrome toaster.. Architect kettle also Dualit.. Shiny elements will really pick up the light.. With the cabinets and the flooring, consider textures and warm elements to boost the look.. I think chrome is a good addition.. as both red and orange might clash with the flooring and cabinets in the colour and finish you have.. Think of other textures and materials you can introduce ...Chopping boards are lovely stacked and marble is another lovely material to use.. Pestle and mortar and a cheese board (I use mine for toast etc.... (Anthropologie and Habitat.. Maybe you want a cream Smeg retro style fridge.... You could then have some cream tiles or a creamy coloured granite for a splash back.. Then maybe a cream Aga... If you were replacing the worktop.. I'd suggest having an upstand as I love this sleek finish.. You can add the same material behind the oven to compliment.. Keep the worktop as clear as possible and a potted rosemary or two could be lovely... Sunflower to mango, so cheerful! Keep your cabinets offwhite, goes best with appliances.
And with yellow walls and white cabinets, the countertop could be either black, wood, white, it will all look lovely with yellow!
(I like yellow with white and black, can you tell?)

We adore yellow (and Portugal) and one of our favourite kitchen designs (and places) we have seen of recent is a stunning mustard ochre yellow by Mylands, we are using it on the walls in a current project - it is exceptional. last monthI find yellow on all the walls a bit too much, and a bit dated examples.
I absolutely adore the Portugal tiles and think updating that would have a huge impact, I also think it's timeless.
It adds colour and personality
Yellow is a happy colour and I love it in the right amounts and in the right places, maybe paint the doors really vibrant yellow?
There are peal and stick options available, that can go over the existing tiles, that way you can test out the look on a cheap side and then invest in a real thing when you have the cash.
Or by that time, you will decide to try something different.
White kitchens are a good blank canvas for a lot of things.
I do think that the worktop is a bit on the darker side than I would like.

The walls? I chickened out and for the second coat, chucked some white plus a splodge of black in, so it's more of a cream than yellow. (Not a massive change, but an improvement from what it was.)
Only decorating job left (for now) is the MDF cupboard ends. I've decided to go with a vinyl wrap rather than painting, as it should be a better finish, cheaper, and will protect from splashes and water ingress.
What do you think of a sand (slightly darker than walls) or a light blue to tone with the counters?
(The plinths also need wrapping, and the ASHP cupboard finishing with doors, and the front door changed...)Long term over next winter: change floor, worktops, and wrap or change cabinet doors.
