Large appliance colour for kitchen?

We are just closing on a house and have a tight budget. The kitchen is long and narrow with saltillo tiles and mid-oak cabinets in almost perfect condition. This is an example of the cabinet colour and tile colour in the kitchen as it is but the room is much darker

The light in the kitchen is quite poor being lit only at one end. Because other work needs to be done first we are keeping the kitchen and tiles but replacing white goods (cooker, fridge etc) and wall backsplash. What colour do you thing would be good to brighten the kitchen? I was wondering about orange or red for cooker/fridge (such as in pic)

but maybe it will be overpowering with oak and saltillo tiles? Any help with a backsplash colour would be great too!

Hello trifides,

What about chrome? Good at reflecting light.. A dual fuel Smeg range for example... A Dualit chrome toaster.. Architect kettle also Dualit.. Shiny elements will really pick up the light.. With the cabinets and the flooring, consider textures and warm elements to boost the look.. I think chrome is a good addition.. as both red and orange might clash with the flooring and cabinets in the colour and finish you have..

Think of other textures and materials you can introduce ...Chopping boards are lovely stacked and marble is another lovely material to use.. Pestle and mortar and a cheese board (I use mine for toast etc.... (Anthropologie and Habitat.. Maybe you want a cream Smeg retro style fridge.... You could then have some cream tiles or a creamy coloured granite for a splash back.. Then maybe a cream Aga...

If you were replacing the worktop.. I'd suggest having an upstand as I love this sleek finish.. You can add the same material behind the oven to compliment.. Keep the worktop as clear as possible and a potted rosemary or two could be lovely...

Of course the other thing I could suggest is painting the cabinets should you want to consider that as an option for you.. : ))

How about an LED strip fitted below the cabinets at plinth height to spill light over the floor and the same trick above the cabinets too. Pennies to run as they are low voltage but make sure the whiteness of the light is appropriate (warm white also available).
Also do you have a pitched roof like the photo? Could you add a roof light?
Lastly consider mirrored splash back. Speak to a glass supplier about the standard needed behind the hob and given the style of the kitchen avoid crisp silver glass and choose mirror with a tint (bronze or grey will both look like standard mirror unless you hold a standard mirror against them)

We mix treatments in the same room all the time, but this must be done carefully; be sure the color of the solid fabric coordinates nicely with the print and you should be fine as long as you "tie them together" - perhaps use the printed fabric of the roman to make a small simple valance to cover the headrail of the roller shades. You could also use the solid fabric as a banding along the sides and bottom or the roman.

What I'm actually wondering though is about mixing the metals - so having the chandelier and lamps with the touch of silver - or would I be better to source antique brass lamps like I have in some other rooms in the house - I kind of wanted to feature quite a bit of glass, and generally the glass comes with chrome, but I'm not sure if it's too modern for the sideboard etc, and mores worried about the clash of metals, but something tells me it might be ok in this instance! I have chrome taps and rainfall shower head in new bathroom and kept with antique brass for the light fittings and door/press knobs. Also yes the room is small but that's not an issue - it is what it is and I'm fine with it!

I would avoid bright coloured white goods in a smaller darker room. You will be stuck with them if you decide you don;t like the colour or it doesn't work. Definitely go for chrome/steel to help reflect light and add your chosen accent colour in other ways. It is much cheaper and easier to change vases, chop boards, feature items than it is to change cooker, fridge etc.

Thank you all, you have convinced me to go chrome with the appliances. Am also going to add LED strip lighting and look into mirroring. I have thought about getting them painted but they have a cathedral type design ie dome at the top and when I look at the painted versions I'm not sure I like it. It seems to make it even more 80's looking.

I'm open to being persuaded if someone can show me a nice result?
