David SalisburyThis large oak orangery was designed and built to capitalise on the sensational far-reaching views across the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).
Situated on top of a hill, this impressive country house required a sensitive design to both complement and enhance the existing building.
A natural oak framed orangery was the ideal solution to make the most of this striking location, whilst working sympathetically with the host property, which was built from Cotswold stone, with timber windows and doors.
Expertly designed by Ian Mitchell, one of David Salisbury’s most experienced designers and a particular specialist with oak buildings, the before and after photos below show the transformation that this new orangery has brought to this property.
The design brief, however, was not entirely straight forward. The challenge was to design a glazed extension that would accommodate the two different door opening heights (best illustrated in the before photo below left), whilst allowing maximum light back into the kitchen behind.
Our customer also requested that the new structure allow a view out above the orangery roof from the vaulted ceiling space behind.
In order to best exploit the outstanding views, and to create a seamless connection with the garden, twin sets of bi-fold doors were designed for each of the new elevations.
Measuring 8.1m wide by 6.1m deep and with a total base area of 49.7 square metres, this large oak orangery has created an open plan living room, extending off the existing kitchen and dining room.
With plenty of space for two sofas, this new living room is the go-to space for relaxing or entertaining family and friends.
A log burner was included in the early stages of the design, to ensure the appropriate flue could be incorporated, whilst providing a lovely atmosphere on Winter evenings.
The finished result is the latest in a long line of oak orangeries, successfully designed and built by David Salisbury, which have helped to transform homes and living spaces all around the country.

Strong architectural elements and a lavish interior design, including cathedral-arched beamed ceilings, hand-scraped and French bleed-edged walnut floors, faux finished ceilings, and custom tile inlays add to the home's charm.
This home features heated floors in the basement, a mirrored flat screen television in the kitchen/family room, an expansive master closet, and a large laundry/crafts room with Romeo & Juliet balcony to the front yard.
The gourmet kitchen features a custom range hood in limestone, inspired by Romanesque architecture, a custom panel French armoire refrigerator, and a 12 foot antiqued granite island.
Every child needs his or her personal space, offered via a large secret kids room and a hidden passageway between the kids' bedrooms.
A 1,000 square foot concrete sport court under the garage creates a fun environment for staying active year-round. The fun continues in the sunken media area featuring a game room, 110-inch screen, and 14-foot granite bar.

Clawson Architects, LLCPerched up on a hill with views of the park, old skate pond with stone warming house, this old stone house looks like it may have been part of an original estate that included the park. It is one of the many jewels in South Orange, New Jersey.
The side porch however, was lacking. The owners approached us to take the covered concrete patio with mildewed dropped ceiling just off the living room, and create a three season room that was a bit more refined while maintaining the rustic charm that could be used as an indoor/outdoor space when entertaining. So without compromising the historical details and charm of the original stone structure, we went to work.
First we enclosed the porch. A series of custom picture and operable casement windows by JELD-WEN were installed between the existing stone columns. We added matching stone below each set of windows and cast sill to match the existing homes’ details. Second, a set of custom sliding mahogany barn doors with black iron hardware were installed to enclose an eight foot opening. When open, entertaining between the house and the adjacent patio flows. Third, we enhanced this indoor outdoor connection with blue stone floors in an English pattern that flow to the new blue stone patio of the same pattern. And lastly, we demolished the drop ceiling and created a varnished batten with bead board cove ceiling adding height and drama. New lighting, ceiling fan from New York Lighting and furnishings indoors and out bring it all together for a beautiful and rustic indoor outdoor space that is comfortable and pleasantly refined.
