This newly constructed home in Hingham, MA was designed to openly embrace the seashore landscape surrounding it. The front entrance has a relaxed elegance with a classic plant theme of boxwood, hydrangea and grasses. The back opens to beautiful views of the harbor, with a terraced patio running the length of the house. The infinity pool blends seamlessly with the water landscape and splashes over the wall into the weir below. Planting beds break up the expanse of paving and soften the outdoor living spaces. The sculpture, made by a personal friend of the family, creates a stunning focal point with the open sky and sea behind.
One side of the property was densely planted with large Spruce, Juniper and Birch on top of a 7' berm to provide instant privacy. Hokonechloa grass weaves its way around Annabelle Hydrangeas and Flower Carpet Roses. The other side had an existing stone stairway which was enhanced with a grove of Birch, hydrangea and Hakone grass. The Limelight Tree Hydrangeas and Boxwood offer a fresh welcome, while the Miscanthus grasses add a casual touch. The Stone wall and patio create a resting spot between rounds of tennis. The granite steps in the lawn allow for a comfortable transition up a steeper slope.

Alfresco Homes, Designs and Lifestyles LtdBeside the additions of 2000 square feet of decks wrapping around the rebuilt home, we placed a large concrete patio space off the walk-out basement, which has a self contained suite. The babbling brook ( comes down the side yard upper area down to this lower rear yard patio, and lands in a natural looking pond. Its man-made, but provides constant waterfall sounds that delights the senses. Not shown in this photo is another fire table we added for ambience, warmth and entertainment in this delightful space. And beyond the lower right is another viewscape towards the sea view beyond, and a Bald Eagle Nest has guests arriving throughout the year.
VESP ArchitectsLocated in a wooded area of coastline above South Sands in Salcombe, the design for this replacement dwelling looked to create a modern home that sits comfortably within its setting but also maximises connection and views out to the surrounding landscape and coast. A simple palette of natural materials reflects the wooded surroundings. The house is predominantly clad in timber, used in panels of either thick planks or narrow battens to give variety. White render and stone make up the rest of the palette, though key areas are finished in a bright rust-red Corten steel, adding colour and character to the neutral tones of wood and stone.
