ORGANIC AND NATURAL DESIGN A well thought out and organized naturalistic style garden design and landscaping compliment the natural terrain of the land and enhance the general theme of the home. In this project, we use natural granite boulders for the fountain accent art and for creating a very natural but dramatic look of the circular driveway island landscaping. We curved boxwood hedge around the existing driveway and soften the garden with hydrangeas, dogwoods, and groundcovers.

When the neighbor expanded, the small, open courtyard became an extension of the neighbor's driveway. Southern Landscape designed and built a custom privacy trellis to shield the neighbor while creating an intimate retreat off the master bedroom. ,Asian jasmine climbs the trellis, while dianella, foxtail, and little gem magnolia highlight the custom water feature, all of which contributes to the quiet oasis.

Reflecting pool with simple evergreen plantings to reinforce the space Simple, subtle, sublime and silent were the principles that defined and shaped the design process. Conceived as a blend between traditional and modern design aesthetics this “Shaker Modern” home and garden is deeply rooted in the Connecticut venacular with a nod toward contemporary spareness and simplicity. A restrained palette of building materials and plants are used in a consistent manner throughout the garden rooms to create a seamless composition of exterior spaces.

No area within this Ryan Hughes designed outdoor space is without elements of interest including the walkway to the spa. In this space, water and fire, tile and stone, light and sound come together and create a haven for relaxation; all before one enters the spa! Along the architectural wall, three Grand Effect fire Candeliers and three stainless steel scuppers are placed within tiled niches featuring 4” precast concrete molding. Each one is a work of art. Work in progress - Day 3. Placing rock so swiftly so well comes with years of experience (30). Similar efforts not for the dilettante.

This small space was once the main parking area for this cottage lakeside home and was radically transformed into an intimate and inviting courtyard. Defined by a hand stacked fieldstone wall, granite stepping stones lead from the entrance of the garden and gradually wind their way over a stream bed and lead to the porch that borders the garden. Although set in a cold weather climate, the client requested that the garden be developed to have a lush tropical feeling yet remain consistent with the general surroundings. This was achieved by using a mixture of large leafed perennials such as Ligularia, Hosta and Petasites (Butterbur) ,along with various groundcovers and other perennials including Ferns, Iris and Japanese Forest Grass. The central feature of the garden is a naturalized meandering stream and pond filled with Koi. The use of water in the garden thematically ties the house and courtyard to the homes’ surrounding, an adjacent lake, and adds movement and tranquil sound to the space. Stepping stones appear to float across the surface of the water allowing the visitor another way to enjoy the space. Scale is essential with even the smallest detail needing to be well executed within such limited space. Photos by: George Dzahristos
