This kitchen came to life after the adobe that was around the island was removed allowing for work space on both sides. The beautiful panels were hidden under the adobe. The breakfast area also had an adobe banco around the perimeter that made seating difficult.

Designed by Jen Denham of Reico Kitchen & Bath in White Plains, MD in collaboration with Potomac Home Improvements, this multi-room remodeling project features Merillat Cabinetry in a variety of collections, styles and finishes. The kitchen features Merillat Masterpiece in the door style Atticus. The perimeter cabinets feature an Evercore Bonsai, complimented by a kitchen island in Hickory with a Sunset Suede finish, all covered by a Silestone Lusso Quartz countertop. The kitchen tile backsplash is Elon Tile Boston North East BC125 2.5x10 Brick, with a Carrara Stone tile custom painted accent. The adjacent Breakfast Area features Merillat Classic in the Ralston door style with a Java Glaze finish with same countertop and brick tile. The laundry room design is also Merillat Classic cabinets in Ralston with a Cotton finish. All three rooms feature Armstrong Prysm PC001 Salvaged Plank Ridged Core White flooring. “Jen was very helpful and supported our color and design features we asked to be included,” said the clients. “If we had an idea, Jen would find a way to make it work. We now have a very beautiful and functional kitchen, breakfast nook and laundry room." “The client was kind, patient, and open to ideas. They wanted to incorporate features of feng shui and bring elements that were most important to her into the kitchen. To do this, we used a natural palette, functional touches, and a custom tile from her home country of Thailand,” said Jen. “They also wanted to reflect the brick style of the front of the house by adding an accent wall into the breakfast area and back splash. However, some of the pull out wall cabinets and doors for the coffee station needed some tweaking once installed. The kitchen is made in cornflower blue under the old fashion in combination with a brown table top create an atmosphere of return to the past helping to revive the "old" without neglecting the new.In the same room is located a dining room in lighter colors with elements of wood in the furniture that gives a combination of these rooms in the overall range of the interior, the walls are complemented by moldings located symmetrically along the walls adding comfort and space to the room, the central molding is filled with interior paintings thus creating a pleasant atmosphere for a meal.

The kitchen countertops are Emerstone Quartz Alabaster Gold with a Kohler Whitehaven sink. “Being part of creating this warm, texture rich, open kitchen was such a pleasure. The artist homeowner had an amazing vision from the beginning to launch the design work,” said Cat. “Starting with her watercolor thumbnails, we met repeatedly before the walls started coming out to set the floor plan. Working with a supportive general contractor, the space transformed from 1978 to a modern showplace with nods to craftsman cottage style.” “The muted green tone is a great backdrop for the lake views the home offers. We settled on an island design, adding storage without taking wall space away. The homeowner took such care with each decision to pull off integration of fresh, clean, lined modern elements, mixed metals, reclaimed woods and antiques. The layered textures bringing warmth to the space is something I hope to take with me for future projects!” In addition to the kitchen, the bathroom was remodeled as well. It includes a Merillat Classic vanity cabinet in the Glenrock door style with 5-piece drawer front in the Boardwalk finish and a Virginia Marble cultured marble wave bowl vanity top in the color Bright White. You can add a breakfast bar or counter to your existing kitchen units, or stick with a good old-fashioned dining table if you don’t need the extra work surfaces. There are a huge variety of island designs to cater to different needs – you can have sinks, ovens, hobs, wine storage and all sorts of drawers and organisers built-in, you can have separate bars and counters that extend from your island, or you could go for a kitchen island on wheels to make your kitchen layout more versatile.

How do I choose my kitchen units and cabinets?

When picking out kitchen units and cupboard styles for a fitted kitchen, you’ll first want to consider the more practical questions – how many units do you need? It’s always best to overestimate how much kitchen storage you’ll need as we all tend to have a habit of filling up whatever current space we have to the maximum. Next you can consider kitchen cabinet style and colour. Shaker style cabinets and raised and recessed panel cabinets offer a more traditional kitchen cabinet look, while flat panel cabinet doors tend to lend more to the modern and contemporary style. However, going for raised or recessed panel work in a striking colour such as dark blue, green or black can still work with contemporary kitchen ideas. White kitchens can give a sleek and clean feel, but remember you may have to do a bit more cleaning of those cupboard doors if you want everything to stay shiny and fresh.
