This lower level kitchen is the perfect spot for entertaining kids and grown ups alike! From the large, expansive island to the open countertop buffet, the custom designed cabinetry is packed with storage and contains a paneled tall pantry, refrigerator, freezer and wine cabinet. Metallic pendants provide task lighting and the back-lit walnut cabinet have plenty of ambient lighting to set the perfect scene. The flooring is a pre-fab luxury vinyl plank, able to hold up to the hustle and bustle of poolside entertaining and indoor/outdoor activity.

We removed walls in the living areas to create an open floor plan, and provided space they wanted for their master bedroom retreat in their new second story area, complete with a spacious bathroom and a walk-in closet. We kept a large window on the front of the house that provided a nice view of the hills which was important to the wife and so she was able to keep an eye on the kids playing. While each member of the family was an important factor in the design process we incorporated room for a Jack-and-Jill bathroom between the kids bedrooms making sure to balance out the size of each bedroom and closet so neither child felt the other had better space.

Lack of symmetry in this angled, open floor plan kitchen was the key challenge. The L-shaped island, which I lined up with two of the walls, resolved the issue. The renewable Red Grandis Wood cabinets (eucalyptus) are finished in weathered gray along the perimeter and creamy white on the island. I provided layers of lighting, including the oversized drum chandelier above the table, which is enclosed on the bottom so that the bulbs are not visible. You can add a breakfast bar or counter to your existing kitchen units, or stick with a good old-fashioned dining table if you don’t need the extra work surfaces. There are a huge variety of island designs to cater to different needs – you can have sinks, ovens, hobs, wine storage and all sorts of drawers and organisers built-in, you can have separate bars and counters that extend from your island, or you could go for a kitchen island on wheels to make your kitchen layout more versatile.

How do I choose my kitchen units and cabinets?

It’s always best to overestimate how much kitchen storage you’ll need as we all tend to have a habit of filling up whatever current space we have to the maximum. Shaker style cabinets and raised and recessed panel cabinets offer a more traditional kitchen cabinet look, while flat panel cabinet doors tend to lend more to the modern and contemporary style. However, going for raised or recessed panel work in a striking colour such as dark blue, green or black can still work with contemporary kitchen ideas. White kitchens can give a sleek and clean feel, but remember you may have to do a bit more cleaning of those cupboard doors if you want everything to stay shiny and fresh.
