Bamboo custom cabinetry was given a grey stain, mixed with walnut strip on the bar and the island given a different stain. Huge amounts of storage from deep pan corner drawers, roll out trash, coffee station, built in refrigerator, wine and alcohol storage, appliance garage, pantry and appliance storage, the amounts go on and on. Floating shelves with a back that just grabs the eye takes this kitchen to another level. The clients are thrilled with this huge difference from their original space.

For this kitchen, we wanted to showcase a contemporary styled design featuring Dura Supreme’s Natural Bamboo with a Horizontal Grain pattern. After selecting the wood species and finish for the cabinetry, we needed to select the rest of the finishes. Since we wanted the cabinetry to take the center stage we decided to keep the flooring and countertop colors neutral to accentuate the grain pattern and color of the Bamboo cabinets. We selected a mid-tone gray Corian solid surface countertop for both the perimeter and the kitchen island countertops. Next, we selected a smoky gray cork flooring which coordinates beautifully with both the countertops and the cabinetry. For the backsplash, we wanted to add in a pop of color and selected a 3" x 6" subway tile in a deep purple to accent the Bamboo cabinetry. This Tiny Home features Blue stained pine for the ceiling, pine wall boards in white, custom barn door, custom steel work throughout, and modern minimalist window trim. The Cabinetry is Maple with stainless steel countertop and hardware. The backsplash is a glass and stone mix. It only has a 2 burner cook top and no oven. The washer/ drier combo is in the kitchen area. Open shelving was installed to maintain an open feel.

The wall behind the stove used to be an opening to the foyer. It was closed in to allow for more wall space for cabinets and appliances. The navy cabinets were crafted and finished in Sherwin Williams Naval by Riverside Custom Cabinetry and designed by Michaelson Homes designer Lisa Mungin. They are accented with brass hardware knobs and pulls from the Emtek Trail line. The modern pendants were purchased from Ferguson. The showpiece of the kitchen is the stunning quartz waterfall island.

A Gilmans Kitchens and Baths - Design Build Project (REMMIES Award Winning Kitchen) The original kitchen lacked counter space and seating for the homeowners and their family and friends. It was important for the homeowners to utilize every inch of usable space for storage, function and entertaining, so many organizational inserts were used in the kitchen design. Bamboo cabinets, cork flooring and neolith countertops were used in the design. Storage Solutions include a spice pull-out, towel pull-out, pantry pull outs and lemans corner cabinets. Bifold lift up cabinets were also used for convenience. Special organizational inserts were used in the Pantry cabinets for maximum organization. However, if the layout doesn’t work, especially if you have a small kitchen, then there’s no necessity to add in a kitchen island. You can add a breakfast bar or counter to your existing kitchen units, or stick with a good old-fashioned dining table if you don’t need the extra work surfaces. There are a huge variety of island designs to cater to different needs – you can have sinks, ovens, hobs, wine storage and all sorts of drawers and organisers built-in, you can have separate bars and counters that extend from your island, or you could go for a kitchen island on wheels to make your kitchen layout more versatile.

How do I choose my kitchen units and cabinets?

It’s always best to overestimate how much kitchen storage you’ll need as we all tend to have a habit of filling up whatever current space we have to the maximum. Next you can consider kitchen cabinet style and colour. Shaker style cabinets and raised and recessed panel cabinets offer a more traditional kitchen cabinet look, while flat panel cabinet doors tend to lend more to the modern and contemporary style. However, going for raised or recessed panel work in a striking colour such as dark blue, green or black can still work with contemporary kitchen ideas. White kitchens can give a sleek and clean feel, but remember you may have to do a bit more cleaning of those cupboard doors if you want everything to stay shiny and fresh. You can also look at corner drawers and cupboards that open up to reveal lots of extra storage.
