This is the first step in revitalizing the backyard of this brand new property. The entire landscape was neglected by the builders and we are working with the homeowners slowly to create a useful space that matches the contemporary look of the house.

This tired, unused San Francisco backyard was transformed into a modern, low-maintenance landscape with site-appropriate plantings enhanced by raised planting beds and a lead-free artificial lawn to replace the existing water-thirsty lawn. I created two separate "rooms" to break up the long narrow yard, and specified full range blue stone for the two small patio areas, connected by a curved pattern of rectangular pavers of the same natural stone. The raised concrete rectangular planting beds were incorporated to bring more movement and interest to the landscape along with gravel bed accents alongside. Some of the existing concrete remained, and was stained with a color to compliment the natural stone. These photos were taken over a three year period. Take a fallen tree to the sawmill to be cut in two. Salvage a few more dead trees and you have a footbridge to cross the creek.

This peaceful Orchard was transformed into a space to sit and relax with the addition of a wildflower meadow. The brief set out the requirements of the retired couple who needed an easily managed space with areas for seating and entertaining, contemplation and relaxation. In spring the Orchard is full of flowering bulbs and in Autumn the apples are ready to harvest

The traditional fountain and surroundings are embellished with a variety of drought tolerant grasses, flowering plants and succulents. The removal of the dense and overgrown shrubs provides more outdoor living space for dining and entertaining for the homeowners' enjoyment. And now with site-appropriate plants and no lawn there is less maintenance and a lower water bill. Full color Blue stone and small mexican pebbles replace the lawn and pathways resulting in an updated and contemporary transformation. A variety of low-water plants including succulents offer year-round appeal and interest throughout the seasons. Photos and Design © Eileen Kelly, Dig Your Garden Landscape Design
