This property has a wonderful juxtaposition of modern and traditional elements, which are unified by a natural planting scheme. Although the house is traditional, the client desired some contemporary elements, enabling us to introduce rusted steel fences and arbors, black granite for the barbeque counter, and black African slate for the main terrace. An existing brick retaining wall was saved and forms the backdrop for a long fountain with two stone water sources. Almost an acre in size, the property has several destinations. A winding set of steps takes the visitor up the hill to a redwood hot tub, set in a deck amongst walls and stone pillars, overlooking the property. Another winding path takes the visitor to the arbor at the end of the property, furnished with Emu chaises, with relaxing views back to the house, and easy access to the adjacent vegetable garden. A complete and eclectic rear garden renovation with a creative blend of formal and natural elements. Formal lawn panel and rose garden, craftsman style wood deck and trellis, homages to Goldsworthy and Stonehenge with large boulders and a large stone cairn, several water features, a Japanese Torii gate, rock walls and steps, vegetables and herbs in containers and a new parking area paved with permeable pavers that feed an underground storage area that in turns irrigates the garden. All this blends into a diverse but cohesive garden. Designed by Charles W Bowers, Built by Garden Gate Landscaping, Inc. © Garden Gate Landscaping, Inc./Charles W. Bowers

This coastal garden is a vibrant oasis of sustainable beauty. It features a welcoming wood entry deck that serves as a charming focal point and offers a seamless transition from the indoors to the outdoors. The garden showcases an array of colorful drought-tolerant perennials, thoughtfully chosen not only for their vibrant blooms but also for their ability to attract and nourish local pollinators.

A painted steel gate and steel planters anchor the formal entry to this estate. While the anchoring features are masculine and bold, free flowing plant materials soften up the entry space. Synthetic lawn and gravel bands provide maintenance free interest on the ground plane. Photo by Rachel Paul Photography

After a tear-down/remodel we were left with a west facing sloped front yard without much privacy from the street, a blank palette as it were. Re purposed concrete was used to create an entrance way and a seating area. Colorful drought tolerant trees and plants were used strategically to screen out unwanted views, and to frame the beauty of the new landscape. This yard is an example of low water, low maintenance without looking like grandmas cactus garden.

Existing garden was completely redone and deck was refurbished. Even though this was a small space but every vertical angle was maximised and detail was thought off. The water feature/bird bath was installed to encourage bird life into the garden and there have been many visits! Mixed planting with some feature rocks. The trellis feature on the key fencelines was custom designed by Parveen for this project and is a unique feature of this project!

Renovating an oddly-shaped yard, giving it functionality and a new aesthetic. We built a BBQ area with a tiled patio and blue concrete caps, a walkway with hexagonal pavers, and a planter pot as a focal point. We also added a fireplace area with a custom-made metal fire pit.
