A Webster Groves, MO home reaches full potential with the addition of a shady front porch. Wood columns with cultured stone bases add texture, and a gently curving sidewalk leads to the Azek floor. Stone pavers create raised flower beds on either side of the porch. Photos by Toby Weiss for MBA.

Peter LaBau, ArchitectA rustic exterior with contemporary detailing hints at the comfortable and well-appointed interior amenities. “I wanted to use reclaimed materials on the cladding. But for an exterior application, I was really reluctant to use something that wouldn’t last. The siding is harvested from beetle-killed trees, which they cut before it has deteriorated. So instead of fueling the massive forest fires we’ve been seeing out West, this timber sequesters that accumulated carbon. They mill it and give it a textured surface and treat it so that the wood can be re-coated in the future and will last for many years. We chose three different colors for each of the separate building sections to achieve the look the client wanted.”

For the patio spaces, we coordinated the color palette and fabric patterns with the interior spaces. In the pack patio, Asian garden stools were used instead of side tables. A very clean and simple concrete fire pit bowl sits in the center of the patio, perfect for summer nights. The fire pit can be easily moved to the side when room for a dance floor is needed. Lots of potted plants in over scaled ceramic containers surround the area and help to further define the space. On the front porch, sit director’s chairs with white canvas seats. A black ceramic garden stool acts as the side table and yellow and white outdoor fabric pillows brighten the space and welcome guests. Photography by Erika Bierman

Located in a charming Scarborough neighborhood just minutes from the ocean, this 1,800 sq ft home packs a lot of personality into its small footprint. Carefully proportioned details on the exterior give the home a traditional aesthetic, making it look as though it’s been there for years. The main bedroom suite is on the first floor, and two bedrooms and a full guest bath fit comfortably on the second floor.
