A window seat was added to the front window and the existing fireplace was transformed dramatic porcelain tiles and a gas insert. The room was used as a home office, by opening the kitchen onto it, we've created a warm and inviting space, where the family loves gathering.

Originally built in 1955, this modest penthouse apartment typified the small, separated living spaces of its era. The design challenge was how to create a home that reflected contemporary taste and the client’s desire for an environment rich in materials and textures. The keys to updating the space were threefold: break down the existing divisions between rooms; emphasize the connection to the adjoining 850-square-foot terrace; and establish an overarching visual harmony for the home through the use of simple, elegant materials. The renovation preserves and enhances the home’s mid-century roots while bringing the design into the 21st century—appropriate given the apartment’s location just a few blocks from the fairgrounds of the 1962 World’s Fair.

The formal dining room of this updated 1940's Custom Cape Ranch features custom built-in display shelves to seamlessly match the classically detailed arched doorways and original wainscot paneling in the living room, dining room, stair hall and bedrooms which were kept and refinished, as were the many original red brick fireplaces found in most rooms. These and other Traditional features, such as the traditional chandelier lighting fixture, were kept to balance the contemporary renovations resulting in a Transitional style throughout the home. Large windows and French doors were added to allow ample natural light to enter the home. The mainly white interior enhances this light and brightens a previously dark home. Architect: T.J.
