Oliver Webber Holliday House is located on a thirteen acre section set amongst the rural landscape of the Moutere Valley. The site has a north-south orientation and is gently sloping, with a large pond in the centre of the section. The property has expansive views out to rolling hills, farmland and the mountain ranges beyond. The clients required a house that would suit just the two of them, as well as accommodate their adult children and extended family. A driveway along the southern boundary leads people up to the house, with the entry being marked by a bright red door. The house is separated into three main wings with a separate garage/workshop. The living wing opens up onto a generous northern-facing courtyard with views over the pond to the orchards beyond. This orientation creates a sun-trap for summer living and allows for passive solar gain during winter. The guest wing can be accessed separately if required, and closed off from the main house. The master wing is a quiet sanctuary with an ensuite overlooking the pool area. The gabled roof forms are reminiscent of the barn-like buildings dotted around the Moutere landscape, however with a modern take using dark-stained vertical cedar cladding. Internally, the material palette comprises polished concrete floors, a pitched cedar-batten ceiling, macrocarpa trusses and a fireplace crafted from local Lee Valley stone. Cedar shelving houses books and objects, and there are designated spaces for art, music and entertaining. Spaces are separate but open, allowing views through to other areas. The house sits slightly elevated above the pond and extensive landscaping allows it to settle into the land and its surroundings. It is a house which complements the owner’s lifestyle and one they can enjoy now and into the future.

This was a complete interior and exterior renovation of a 6,500sf 1980's single story ranch. The original home had an interior pool that was removed and replace with a widely spacious and highly functioning kitchen. House 19 Architect: Jestico + Whiles Client: Heinz Richardson Awards Won: RIBA South Award 2016 Photography Credit: Grant Smith House 19 is a two storey dwelling and by Using Shou Sugi Ban in multiple widths they have created a building which stands out for aesthetic detail rather than size. Incorporating corten steel around the windows and doors adds a contemporary vibe alongside detailed the flint work adding a traditionally local material to the exterior. Taking careful consideration with the impact of the building they reduced the height on the southern elevation to a single storey; this forms a very eccentric pitched roof. This has also been done to take full advantage of the photovoltaic cells; the integration of these is both subtle and elegant. This is a modest house that reflects the style and quality of the design. We worked with the Architect closely to achieve the finish they wanted with our bespoke Shou Sugi Ban. Enhanced Grain – Kyoka sa reta Kokumotsu was the chosen product allowing the effect of burnt timber aesthetics in terms of visual and textured appeal. A round table leaves plenty of room for serving food at its centre, but a rectangular table is more flexible for seating extra guests at either end. What are the best dining chairs for my table?

If your table hasn’t been sold with matching chairs then you have some extra flexibility to select dining chairs that suit your desired dining room feel. For traditional dining rooms you will want to opt for a full set of high backed formal dining chairs, whether these are upholstered, leather or wood framed. If you are looking for a more informal dining room, then a selection of mismatched chairs in different materials such as moulded plastic and even metal can be a great way to achieve this. For a really relaxed dining experience, you could even opt for a full length bench, which has the additional advantage of saving space as it can be tucked away under the table when not in use.

How should I decorate my dining room?
