The client's program included home office space, artist's studio, social space, and reorienting the home's main entrance, as the existing entrance was disused. The addition enclosed the breezeway and wrapped around the front and on top of the garage. Allowing the addition to expand around the garage gave it an appropriate scale and helped the project to achieve its programmatic goals.

We designed a custom built in storage unit that spanned the entire wall including a more shallow area where a fireplace used to be. We were successfully able to enclose the pedals and stool for the keyboard as well as create a pull out tray for the keyboard to stash it away when not in use. Our client now has tons of storage with much room to grow for her expanding business. She has referred to the new color palette as "sunny and inspiring" which is certainly the perfect feeling in an office! Photo: Emily Gilbert

Having a contemporary home office can seem like the best of both worlds, but it’s important to keep in mind that this should be a productive space that keeps out the many distractions of home. You may not have the luxury of a dedicated room to turn into your contemporary office room or home library, so choose your space wisely to ensure privacy and adequate storage. A carefully designed corner in your living room or an alcove can be made into a productive and stylish study space. Your home office furniture with the desk in the centre of your design, needs to include both work surface space and storage ideas – never underestimate how quickly a computer desk can become cluttered with stationery and box files.
