In Seattle's Fremont neighborhood SCJ Studio designed a new landscape to surround and set off a contemporary home by Coates Design Architects. The narrow spaces around the tall home needed structure and organization, and a thoughtful approach to layout and space programming. A concrete patio was installed with a Paloform Bento gas fire feature surrounded by lush, northwest planting. A horizontal board cedar fence provides privacy from the street and creates the cozy feeling of an outdoor room among the trees. LED low-voltage lighting by Kichler Lighting adds night-time warmth.

A Seattle couple needed to take advantage of our amazing summer weather and asked for a way to watch movies outside. We were up to the challenge, designing a custom concrete bench that by day serves as built-in seating and transforms at night into a perfect spot to catch a flick on the fly! Other touches include modern planting and steel planters to match the contemporary feel of the home.

This project in Cambridge had an overgrown backyard space with no storage and no entertaining area. We designed and installed beautiful seating walls, a raised patio space, an enclosed trash enclosure, new cedar tongue and groove fencing, plants, lighting, irrigation, a green wall and welcoming moon gate to the garden.
Accents in this garden were stained black to tie in to the house accents.
A recirculating fountain was built to provide the relating flow of water.

Based on the a logarithmic spiral this garden required extensive protection of existing structures through the demolition of an existing swimming pool and the construction of a sweeping spiral like face brick retaining wall.
The wall has a double bull nose capping and is raked and curved to meet the existing contours. The garden was intended to be functional, productive, provide habitat for a range of native fauna, relaxation and recreation for the owners.
Features of this sustainable landscape include the hardwood bespoke day bed, circular frog pond, custom made and sourced special dry pressed bricks, and the sustainable, productive and elegant plantscaping.
