This California Ranch style home was given a contemporary front entry to suit the lifestyle of a growing family. A large front lawn was replaced with drought tolerant ornamental grasses, shrubs and succulents that can withstand high summer temperatures. The new front entry flows from the street to the front door featuring “plank” pavers that echo the horizontal lines of the ranch architecture, creating a stylish and welcoming presence from the curb. The front garden of this period Edwardian property in Acton, west London, was a large expanse of concrete hard standing, and overgrown planting. The aim of the garden design was to create a garden that combined space for off-street parking for one car, architectural soft landscaping as well as a spot in which to sit and enjoy the garden. The style of the new garden had to be sympathetic to the house and it was important that the end result was more contemporary front garden than everyday driveway. Additional screening to the neigbouring boundary wall was a key requirement, as was the need to keep an existing cherry tree.

Contemporary Front Garden and Outdoor Space Ideas and Designs

Our gardens and outside spaces deserve as much attention as our interiors – they can provide the first impression of our homes to visitors, a sanctuary to escape to in warm weather and an additional living and entertaining space. While not all of us are blessed with large contemporary gardens and bags of outside space, there are plenty of ways of improving what you do have and making it work for you. Perhaps you only have a roof terrace or balcony? You can still get green-fingered with plant pots and raised flower beds, and you can create an outdoor haven with decking, seating, outdoor lighting and various accessories to entice everyone outside. If you do have a bit of space to play with outside, then aside from a lawn in your contemporary garden, you could add some extra elements to help you enjoy the space even more. Adding a patio will give you the perfect area for dining, lounging or even a bit of outdoor cooking, and if you choose to go for a veranda you’ll have a bit of shelter from the hot sun or the rain while still enjoying being outdoors. If space and budget aren’t too much of a problem then a swimming pool or hot tub could be next on your list.
