The horizontal lines, flat or hipped roofs with broad eaves, windows assembled in horizontal bands, solid construction, craftsmanship, and it's simple restraint of the use of decoration allows immense amounts of light throughout the home, exposing the natural elements that have been brought inside. Just some of the extraordinary features of this estate include a field geothermal heating and cooling system which allow this 9,000 SF home be economically heated and cooled! This home is also handicapped accessible and includes an elevator. There is a 4 car detached garage along with another large building that was used as R.V. Storage. Cafeina DesignSol 25 was designed under the premise that form and configuration of architectural space influence the users experience and behavior. Consequently, the house layout explores how to create an authentic experience for the inhabitant by challenging the standard layouts of residential programming. For the desired outcome, 3 main principles were followed: direct integration with nature in private spaces, visual integration with the adjacent nature reserve in the social areas, and social integration through wide open spaces in common areas.
In addition, a distinct architectural layout is generated, as the ground floor houses two bedrooms, a garden and lobby. The first level houses the main bedroom and kitchen, all in an open plan concept with double height, where the user can enjoy the view of the green areas. On the second level there is a loft with a studio, and to use the roof space, a roof garden was designed where one can enjoy an outdoor environment with interesting views all around.
Sol 25 maintains an industrial aesthetic, as a hybrid between a house and a loft, achieving wide spaces with character. The materials used were mostly exposed brick and glass, which when conjugated create cozy spaces in addition to requiring low maintenance.
The interior design was another key point in the project, as each of the woodwork, fixtures and fittings elements were specially designed. Thus achieving a personalized and unique environment.
Arielle C. Schechter, AIAThis is the private deck off the master bedroom. This western deck faces a magnificent view. We designed sliding wood screens that can be easily closed to block the intense summer heat when needed.
Donald Lococo ArchitectsDesigned in 1970 for an art collector, the existing referenced 70’s architectural principles. With its cadence of ‘70’s brick masses punctuated by a garage and a 4-foot-deep entrance recess. This recess, however, didn’t convey to the interior, which was occupied by disjointed service spaces. To solve, service spaces are moved and reorganized in open void in the garage. (See plan) This also organized the home: Service & utility on the left, reception central, and communal living spaces on the right.
To maintain clarity of the simple one-story 70’s composition, the second story add is recessive. A flex-studio/extra bedroom and office are designed ensuite creating a slender form and orienting them front to back and setting it back allows the add recede. Curves create a definite departure from the 70s home and by detailing it to "hover like a thought" above the first-floor roof and mentally removable sympathetic add.Existing unrelenting interior walls and a windowless entry, although ideal for fine art was unconducive for the young family of three. Added glass at the front recess welcomes light view and the removal of interior walls not only liberate rooms to communicate with each other but also reinform the cleared central entry space as a hub.
Even though the renovation reinforms its relationship with art, the joy and appreciation of art was not dismissed. A metal sculpture lost in the corner of the south side yard bumps the sculpture at the front entrance to the kitchen terrace over an added pedestal. (See plans) Since the roof couldn’t be railed without compromising the one-story '70s composition, the sculpture garden remains physically inaccessible however mirrors flanking the chimney allow the sculptures to be appreciated in three dimensions. The mirrors also afford privacy from the adjacent Tudor's large master bedroom addition 16-feet away.
