Off of the third floor’s master bedroom, a deck features clear views over the canyon and a glimpse of the city beyond. We opted for a straw-like material to sheathe the underside of the roof cover. As in our inspiration picture, straw is often used in Greece as material for pergola covers. New light fixtures were installed throughout the outdoor spaces.

Some renovations don’t need a whole new roof – it can often be just a case of freshening up an existing roof with a modern colour scheme. This is particularly relevant when talking about tiled roofs – concrete or terracotta – because they last for decades. The only thing that might change over time is favoured colour schemes. Enter renovating experts, the Three Birds Renovations, who have just completed their ninth house renovation – a super-fast, super-stylish renovation project.

This family wanted to transform their second-story deck into a more attractive and usable space. We demolished the old deck and built a new one featuring stairs and a brilliant skylight.

We completed this exterior renovation just in time for our clients to enjoy the last days of summer. In order to bring new life to this backyard, we built a multi-level deck using Trex composite decking. The home-owner wanted a bit of overhead protection for the upper deck so we had a local glass company install a frameless lami-glass canopy, which we supported with fir beams. They completed the design for the upper deck with side-mounted glass guard rails for a cleaner look.

This Beacon Hill brownstone started with a new rubber roof, bare and sprawling, the ideal spot for a great family gathering place. After thoughtful consideration, a master plan was developed to provide all the amenities an urban outdoor space could offer; comfortable seating, customized storage, mature plantings, a fully functioning outdoor kitchen, comprehensive irrigation, discrete lighting, natural materials and open space for larger groups. As this project was completed in the context of a comprehensive renovation of the building, we were easily afforded access below the deck to augment the structure and accommodate the added weight of the roof deck elements. A new staircase and generous hatch were added from the top floor inside to home to provide easy and convenient use of the deck. Similarly, bringing gas to the large grill, and hot and cold water to the sink, ice-maker and irrigation system were relatively straightforward. Through the careful use of natural materials and the well designed layout, the space feels like an extension of the inside living space and welcomes its visitors to sounds of music coming from the Hatch Shell steps away and views unique to the character and history of Boston.
