So you’ve decided to employ the expert help of a professional organiser, but you’re unsure what the process entails. You might be anxious that they’ll judge you, or that they’ll get rid of all your belongings. Nicki Munns from All Organised shares what to expect when you invite an experienced declutterer into your home.

Find your perfect fit
Professional decluttering and organising is a relatively new, but quickly growing, profession in the UK. The Association of Professional Declutterers and Organisers is an official body that many home organisation companies belong to. A number of organisers have developed specialist areas of expertise, so it’s likely you’ll find a declutterer who will be a good fit for your personal requirements.

Inviting someone into your home to declutter your possessions is a very personal journey and you’ll need to choose an individual you trust and with whom you feel at ease.

Arrange a visit
Walking through your home and discussing how it works for its occupants will give the organiser the ability to come up with a customised solution for your individual needs.

You may feel your situation is embarrassing, but most organisers have seen many homes in all sorts of disarray and they won’t judge. Your problem may feel unique, but your organiser will generally have a wealth of experience to draw from and plenty of advice to offer.
Discuss your needs
At the start of the session, your situation will be fully assessed. In order for a workable plan of action to be formulated, it’s important to be specific with your organiser about your expectations and requirements, and to fully discuss your organisational challenges.

Bear in mind that there’s more involved in the process than just sorting things into keep, donate and dispose piles. A professional organiser will help you to restore order in your home where it’s lacking.

Start to declutter
You will not be forced to dispose of items, but will be actively encouraged to edit your belongings so they fit comfortably into the home environment. An organiser should be able to make some suggestions on how to dispose of unwanted belongings in a sensible and environmentally friendly way, such as charities or organisations that would greatly benefit from those items.

Don’t worry if a member of the household isn’t at the session – a professional organiser won’t declutter their possessions. Instead, anything that hasn’t been given a permanent home will be sorted into boxes in order for decisions to be made at a later stage.

Allocate time for the kids
A declutterer will sometimes work with children and teenagers in their bedrooms or playrooms. Even though the professional will probably ask exactly the same questions that you would as a parent, the outcome of the session can be very different from if you tried to declutter with your own child. This is because the experts are seen as professionally objective.

In fact, the same principle applies at the other end of the scale, too, when it comes to helping our own parents to downsize.

Work with your budget
If your budget is tight, you can always ask an organiser to set tasks for you to complete in between sessions. Implementing these suggestions can be very empowering and will speed the process along nicely.

Prices vary, depending on where your organiser is located, but on average the costs range from £35 to £75 per hour, depending on the service required, with All Organised’s rates at £50 to £65 per hour.

Feel free to delegate
A common misconception is that organising your home is something you should be capable of doing yourself. In a very busy world, a lot of us are short of time and this can serve as a roadblock to completing tasks.

Just as we would employ an accountant to look after our tax affairs, it’s possible to employ a professional declutterer to sort out the efficient organisation of our homes.

Learn new skills
Coaching, or the teaching of organisational skills, is often part of the package that a professional organiser offers. By learning new skills, you’ll be motivated and empowered to keep your home decluttered in the longer term.

You’ll be surprised at how much can be achieved in a relatively short period of time and, by learning new skills, you’ll really be able to live a life less cluttered.
