Room of the Week: A Cool and Contemporary Loft Space in Marseille
Designer pieces and bold colours make for a chic and effortlessly cool space in Marseille
Exposed beams, high ceilings, beautiful light and sought-after furniture make this luxury apartment on the Joliette quay in Marseille a beautiful and exciting space.
Architect Adrien Champsaur was contacted by the owner who wanted to reorganise the space to its best effect. ‘The client wanted to review the plans, which did not make the best use of the space under the roof. In addition, the layout of the apartment was at odds with the high-end feel he wanted for this property,’ the architect explains.
The living room has a unique style, with lots of different zones creating different moods. ‘A collection of objects were carefully chosen to stay in keeping with the owner’s items,’ Adrien explains. Each piece of furniture is considered as a ‘room’. These are appropriately assembled to create sub-spaces with different moods and functions.’ The Pascal Michalon mirror creates an interesting play on reflections.

The living room is strewn with contemporary and designer pieces, but Adrien brought in a few other influences too. The owner collects African objects, so the architect used natural, weighty materials such as oak to bring in texture.
Colour has also played an important role in the renovation of this apartment. Using nearly all white, for example, has enhanced the volume of the space, while the furniture creates different moods.

In the living room, one wall stands apart from the others… painted blue, it enhances the depth of the room.

The architect explains that ‘flow between the rooms can express itself thanks to the furniture, which acts as the support for objects and works of art.’ This means a lot of thought had to go into the choice and arrangement of the furniture. Careful use of indirect light showcases the volume of the space.
In the restoration project, Adrien planned a patio, around which all the rooms are designed.
