Once heard a description of the Barry Bucknell type of DIY, (which I remember as involving a lot of hardboard) as being an era of "painstaking shoddiness"!

I used to live in Ealing, quite close to what I believe was Barry's filmset house, think it was near The Grove, or something like that, remember someone pointing it out when I said I was pulling the hardboard off all our internal doors and unblocking the fireplaces.

While renovating our family home, we ‘found’ an original door hidden in the wall between the sitting room and the hall. It had been boarded in with hardboard, which still had the makers label on it, and had been plastered and wall-papered over with wood chip. We re-instated it in the place it used to be, which was evident from the woodwork and sealed up the doorway which had been created by previous occupants. The old door was a bit worse for wear but a lick of paint sorted it out.
