Fun Houzz: The Secrets of a Home That’s Cool for Cats
They’re an exacting bunch, our kitties, and everything needs to be just so. Would your home pass muster?
Let’s face it, cats rule the roost, so when it comes to our décor, we need to think about their needs, too – somewhere comfy to sleep, a stylish place to eat and, of course, designer furniture to get their claws into…
What do you think of this chair? I’ve reupholstered it in a bright graphic – the defining black band is a masterstroke, I think you’ll agree. I’d like to re-cover the headboard, too, but when you sleep for three-quarters of the day, there just aren’t that many hours left for craft.
I’d love to be adventurous – climb trees, ford rivers – but it’s just not me. And this fabulous forest mural does the job – the great outdoors from the comfort of my day bed. Really, why get my paws dirty?
When they offered me my own chair, I insisted on a designer one – something that would be as totes delish as me and frame me perfectly, like this space-age egg number. I have to look my best at all times. That’s just how I roll.
Don’t get me wrong, I do like wooden floors, and this narrow-stave one is a beauty, but it’s too shiny for me to really get my claws into. I have to turn to the chair legs for my daily manicure.

I don’t like to boast, but it’s only the senior pets who have a designated dining space. It’s just a fun wall sticker, but it screams Important!
I won’t lie to you – my days are manic. I’m out on patrol at first light and have quite a few bins and birds to work through. So I need a haven. This elegant space in super-soothing shades is where I get some me time.
And this dish is…? Seriously, this restaurant is going to the dogs. I do appreciate the cool décor and coordinated dinnerware, but freshly prepared fish this ain’t.

I’d like to introduce you to my very smart and easily accessible wardrobe. OK, I don’t actually wear any of the clothes, but they make a brilliant climbing frame and swing, and I get to chat to a rather handsome cat in the mirror.
I spend most of my days and – strictly between you and me – quite a lot of my nights outdoors, so I needed to replicate my favourite sofa out here with a smart, weather- and dirty paw-resistant design for alfresco lounging. Well, you don’t expect me to lie on the floor, do you?
I’m a surfaces kind of gal. It’s all about a mix of textures for me: smooth leather for cool lounging, soft cottons for naps and some tactile wool (buttoned, natch) for sharp claw maintenance.
