Brosh Architects (over there in Borehamwood, near my old school!) - thank you for taking the time to reply so thoroughly. I did have the crack in the brickwork monitored over 6 months by a loss adjuster, back in 2006. It was deemed to be 'stable' and not due to subsidence. You might be right about the manholes, though - I've long suspected that, but haven't known who to contact, so have done nothing!

chemistrykaren It is a pleasure and thank you for the kind words :-). The reason that we moved here was because of the good schools :-). For drainage CCTV I normally use "MetroRod" (but there are many other companies)- you can use this link ....https://www.metrorod.co.uk/services/cctv-drain-survey/  . It is should be a straight forward procedure and should cost around £250-300+VAT. after the survey they give you a report with pictures showing the current drain condition and what needs to be done in case of a damage... i hope it helps.
