vinyl flooring in a bedroom??

Having finally (WHOOP) moved our sofa into our new extension from our temporary lounge, we now have to finish the old room and make it into the spare bedroom. It’s about 12’ sq with a bay window and we have replaced the old floorboards which were rotten, with flooring osb/ply stuff. Not T&G though. So we have a few gaps where pieces are screwed down in sections and it was done like this because the stop tap is under the floor so we need an access hatch in the corner.

I wanted to put a wood laminate down as it’s North facing and drab and didn’t want carpet. Husband wants carpet as easy to pull up for access so I thought .... what about a single vinyl flooring that looks like wood?? Maybe a herringbone effect?

What do you guys think? I know usually it’s stuck down but as we have gaps and recessed screw holes it will show all these when walked on. So I though we have a load of that gold foam underlay - could we put this down first before the vinyl is laid?

Vinyl is fine, but it'll need a hard underfloor, no gold foil. So either smoth it down (fill gaps and screwholes) op pick laminate/click-pvc?

The click vinyl will need it plying under but then it will be even harder to get to as you nail it in so that’s out. Laminate means not fixing the skirting down and being able to quickly lift it to access the floor panel for the stop tap (we tried to get it moved but it’s the first point in the house so it would mean a costly job)

That’s why I thought vinyl would be easy but it would have to be very thick to hide the base edges. Unless I taped them??

I would also definitely go white if the windows are on the green wall. Will be much more natural to tie the accent wall with the stark wht contrasting walls. Always a very chic contemporary look. Also very relaxing as opposed to the treatments standing out when you already have your standout feature- the green accent wall. Great white bed you ordered! Then I love all the blue/green/ silver accent advice. I did a similar room in purples/greys/ whites and we used great posted prints of florals with a little oriental flair in nice big mats w frames. You could do florals or nice big botanicals in greens would be very fresh and modern!! White or silver frames or maybe even the shock of black would be cool.

I had wardrobes in wood finish They looked so dark So I could not cope with BLACK.! I would sand and paint the wardrobe white and the walls. The bed you could make pull down covers for top and end . (Make them like an open bag so you can wash them .But a devan bed would give open space look).. materal of the same colour as the curtains. Padding them or just covering. Make the spread the same colour. For day time. That should lift the darkness from the room. You can have a blackout blind for night if you want to keep the colours light. My room looked a treet much brighter. and I sleep better now. .OliveH

I am not sure what background to put in this bedroom because there is the en-suite door on that wall...Was thinking to do panelling of the wall behind the bed like on the picture below? The walls will be painted in Elephants Breath and the en-suite door and frame will be white. Was thinking the panels to be the same color as the walls? There will be a white carpet also on the floor... Any ideas are welcome. Thank you all in advance.

Tape is not hard enough. As far as I know, click pvc/vinyl needs the same subfloors as laminate. Or am I wrong?

Sheet vinyl is too soft to lay on gaps and holes. And should not be on another soft material.

Laminate is said to need 1cm clearance all around, so you will need baseboards and/or these stick on plinths.

Don't know about click vinyl egdes, but I guess you'll need to finishthese edges too.

But so will carpet..

How big is this access hatch? Could it be covered by a nightstand/cabinet? I would not let my entire floor depend on it.. And with laminate/click I would make a hatch, so you wouldn't need to rip out planks to reach the stop tap.

We’ve just put down sheet vinyl in our utility and cloakroom, we had to have both screeded first so I guess it depends on how even your subfloor is. I don’t think you can put foam underlay beneath sheet vinyl, but hopefully a pro can come along and give you some proper advice

Ah ok. I didn’t realise you needed it that flat for sheet vinyl, booo. Back to the drawing board I think - carpet, urgh. Sob

Why don’t you have the laminate but put an access panel in? Is the stopcock in a prominent position or hidden? This is an access panel for bathrooms, but you can get other types.

The stopcock is under the floor in the corner as you walk into the room. But it’s also that the new extension area has glued down vinyl planks so we want to be able to have access under the old floor (where all the pipes and electrics are) from the old lounge as it’s suspended floor. Bit OTT I know but I have to work around the OH’s request. LOL.

I prefer laminate but it also means waiting for him to fit it and he doesn’t want to do any diy at the moment (been at it for 1.5 years!) Which is why he suggested carpet, ha ha. Easy and quick.

Tani, it is difficult to comment without seeing the state of the OSB/Plywood boards that have been installed. The gaps between the boards are not a major issue as they can be filled, as can the screw holes.

What is however very important is whether the boards are all level. If they are not then you get nasty ridge lines showing once the vinyl is installed.

I would suggest that you use an individual textured wood effect vinyl tile so that any issues with your sub-floor are minimalised. For the area where you need access, I would buy a purpose made hatch into which you can fit the vinyl and leave nice clean lines.

Tani, please correct me if it’s not possible, but why is a stop cock under floorboards? Would it not be better to move it somewhere more accessible? ;-)

Cushion vinyl and underlay is big NO, Tani. Lots of sponginess going on, making the cushion vinyl susceptible to puncturing.

Cushion vinyl over the top of what you have described your subfloor to be is possible but the subfloor will need preparing. No gaps, no screw holes… all needs filling. If you don't you will quickly see the unevenness "grinning" through your vinyl. If you use underlay and if you do not prepare your subfloor correctly you will void any manufacturing warranties that come with the cushion vinyl.

Click LVT is possible. If the subfloor isn't too bad you could float the click LVT straight over the top, No gluing or screwing necessary and you could enhance the walking experience by using a recommended underlay. It make the flooring softer when walking on and will dramatically reduce sound, too.

Heaven knows! LOL. Was there when we moved in and although we could have moved it, it’s the first point in the house so if there are any leaks etc and we moved it into another room, it would go through 2 areas then. If that makes sense.

The mains stop is just at the front of the house though so it’s probably quicker to run outside and turn it off but we still want to have access under the floors in future for electrics etc (Bungalow).
