Hi, looking at the plan, the main challenge is fitting three separate functions into the room: a substantial kitchen, a proper dining area for four to six people, and a comfortable seating zone. The room is a reasonable size at approximately 4.65 × 4.10m, but a 1900 × 900mm island can quickly take up more space than it appears to on the drawing.

I would test two layout options:

Keep the island, but reduce it slightly to around 1600–1800 × 850–900mm. I would use it mainly for preparation and storage, perhaps with seating for two, while placing the dining table towards the more open end of the room.

If a proper dining table is the priority, replace the island with a shorter peninsula or compact breakfast bar. This would allow a table around 2200–2400 × 900mm, while preserving better circulation and space for a small sofa.

I would also avoid filling the entire right-hand wall with tall cabinetry. Concentrating the tall units closer to the utility-room/entrance end, then using lower units towards the open part of the room, should make the space feel less like a corridor and leave the dining area more flexible.

As a general guide, I would aim for approximately 1000–1100mm between the island and fixed cabinetry. Around 900mm is usually the minimum, but with two children and more than one person cooking, the additional clearance makes a noticeable difference. The route to the patio doors and utility room should also remain completely unobstructed.

If the island currently contains the hob, I would consider moving it onto the wall run and keeping the island as a preparation and serving surface. This is often safer and more practical in a family kitchen, and it simplifies extraction.

The final decision would depend on the exact positions of the doors, patio opening, windows, radiators and services, but I think the key is to decide whether the island or the dining table is the stronger priority. Trying to accommodate both at full size, together with a sofa, may make the room feel crowded.
