Are you planning a skylight directly over where the dining table will be situated? If you are there are many more imaginative options than pendant lighting. I'm not sure what you mean by lamps? Do you mean wall lights or table lamps? Any overhead lighting should be on a dimmer switch. If you included a floorplan of the space with the position of the sky lights you would receive better more detailed advice.

You'll need to be careful positioning the lights with the skylights to avoid awkward reflections/ light disruptions. Wall lights might be a better option. Where would you put the lamps? Those could cast shadows as well. Do you have an image of what you were thinking and a floorplan for the space?

Hello here is a floor plan

Thanks for the suggestions. Would the track lights/spotlights on a bar still give the nice mood lighting? The ceiling is very high (possibly too high!) and I’m worried they will still feel like overhead lighting

It's a good plan the pendants over the dining table. How long is your table? It might not be very efficient as 1 larger light might have looked better but it depends on what pendants you choose. I wouldn't choose anything too large. A few of the designer scandi ones come in different sizes like the Secto range. Tom Raffield is another interesting source for designer lights with a pedigree.

There are a few ways that you can ensure that track lights give off more of a mood lighting effect in comparison to feeling more like overhead lighting.

One way is to use warm white bulbs (3000 kelvins) to ensure a more ambient lighting effect. Another way is to make sure you use bulbs that are compatible with a dimmer switch and wire the lights to a dimmer switch to ensure the lighting is the right brightness that you want.

A 3rd way which is a little more technical, is track adapters for pendant lights. This way you can install the track fixture on its own without the spotlights and using the adapter you can actually hang a pendant light from this and move it to any position of your choosing on the track.
