How about a simple clear glazed window without the bars? Would match the other windows better perhaps.

I also think a plain plate glass window would look better without all the glazing bars. This will certainly minimise the style of the arched lintel which does not tie in with the rest of your glazing. Looking at the horizontal cladding in the windows above would it not be possible to hide the arch behind something similar?

Since the curve is outnumbered 4 to 1 by the pointed windows above the curve needs to be adapted to suit. You could copy the horizontal cladding and add a point at the top. What is the window treatment inside or is the window uncovered? Depending on which way it faces you might gain some shade inside by cladding the outside..

The window is uncovered inside, as its on a small landing half way up the stairs and we’re not overlooked. I’m concerned though that cladding it will block some light coming into the hall (which can be a bit dark). It only gets sun coming directly through it until about 12:00 midday.

Ok it was just a thought. There are always practical considerations to consider too. I would speak to a glazing company and see if there are any shape alternatives to your current curved top. You never know what they might suggest. You may be able to have a slightly less curved top with minimal impact on the brick shaped lintel. It's worth asking the question.

I think you either have to have a builder change the shape of the window or keep the arched top. Personally I like the arch and think it’s in keeping with the curved top of the downstairs windows.

If you want more light on a landing I think you should get the builder to increase the height of this window and add a skylight

Yes, I think we’re going to keep the shape, and have fewer, larger panes in some configuration.

I would try a single pane for the rectangular part and an opening section for the curved upper part. This would give you a lot more light too as windows with lots of glazing bars allow less light to pass through. This would be a win for you as you mentioned that it only has light for part of the day.

Thanks Alorya for your ideas, however I’m resigned to keeping the arched shap and leaving the other window shapes as they are, as anything else will be more than we wish to spend (other than the cost of new windows); but also, this modern house is in a rural village in Norfolk in the UK and I’m really not going to style it as though it was in what I’m assuming is the ”far west” in 17th century America! This is the UK Houzz site.

I think that is my favourite window, at least the glazing is matched to the window opening. You have a mismatched collection of pastiche styles, fake dormers and arch topped windows with rectangular infills. I'd accept that it is all new and functional and spend my money elsewhere.

Love the arch. As you, and everyone else has suggested, just change the glass to plain. Shouldn’t be an expensive job. There are tradespeople who specialise in window alterations.
