Those sort of tiled fireplaces were often used from the 1920s through to the 1950s. I had several in my 1934 house when I moved in. They are a bit marmite - some people love them and others hate them. They were used as a cheaper alternative to the more expensive marble or wood fireplaces used in earlier periods. Cast iron was also popular and, in my view, much more attractive. I removed all mine as I found them ugly and dated and added a homemade reproduction one in my living room which I found more aesthetically pleasing. Didn’t cost a lot to create (wooden mantle painted white, sandstone hearth) and I just think it’s nicer. Of course if you like it then keep it. This is my homemade fireplace replacing the tiled one. £99 for wooden surround and £25 for sandstone hearth.
