With or without the extra shelf

I am planning to add some built in shelves in my living room to display lots of artefacts & knick knacks I have collected over the years.
I wanted to be able to have shelves without making the display unit overwhelm the room so I thought of these 2 arched shelves on both sides of the couch. They can add a softness & an old world look to the design and enable me to display artefacts. I intend to put a long couch in between and 2 big paintings above the couch.
The question i am struggling with is whether I should add an extra shelf that spans the centre, just below the paintings (Picture 2) and use it to display some more artefacts?
Will it look good or will it look odd?
Or should I just stay with a more clean design - picture 1?

I like option 1 or modified option 2

if you feel like you want more display, or have shelf space behind the sofa,I wouldn't go with a floating shelf But have a build it down. so the area above would be like a niche and below behind the sofa part of the wall. Think that would be a cleaner design.

But don't try to overfill everything, every room needs to have some breathing space ( negative space) so even if you decide to go with the extra shelf behind the sofa I wouldn't overload it, but would keep it minimal and considered.

Simplify is always a good strategy with play rooms. The temptation to cover the walls with artwork and posters can add to the visual clutter. I would suggest a larger area rug to ground the space and create a soft place for playing on the floor. A medium colour with a fleck from other hues in the curtains and upholstery will help hide dirt and lint. I think you could definitely cozy it up with a warm wall colour to unify the space. Lastly, closed storage for the toys goes a long way to creating order from the chaos. You will have a lovely space the children enjoy and you find restful.

Just a quick note to thank you all for sharing your thought, ideas, experience and time. It may not be perfect or according to the the "Rules", but it is Me and my family. Each and every piece was chosen by me in different parts of the world and each one of them has a unique story behind. I am very pleased with my space. I love it! Hi. I think the overall look is good. Large tiles do make a room feel bigger as the pattern is less busy however I've seen the hex tiles in small bathrooms and they seem to work as your inspiration pic shows. I would probably lose the flowers though if I'm honest. Do you want the window for light or ventilation? Could a decent extractor be sufficient? I'm thinking that back ŵall could look quite busy. Is there any opportunity to change the layout? Moving soil pipes can be a little costly but could the sink be moved although ideally the loo would be hidden round the corner. You can pick up some great looking vintage or vintage style taps on ebay although unsure if the quality of the repro ones, If the layout can't be changed maybe have a corner loo and ŵall hung trough sink and put some storage in on the rhs as you come through the door depending on how you plan for the shower to open

Why don't you have an L shape and use the area under the window also for your sink and a couple of extra units? you could add shelves on either side of the window? Not sure why your fridge has to go at that end? might be best at the other end? As Sarah, suggests, get full height cupboards, and put the microwave in one of those, so that you're not losing so much space. Extra storage is probably more useful than having the microwave on display? It can easily be put on a shelf within a cupboard. (Our isn't even in our kitchen, but then we only use it once a week or so... so really depends) I'd also suggest drawers to the bottom of your units instead of cupboards.

i would stick with option 1. The extra shelf wouldn’t be overly practical for sitting on the sofa?

I would also consider wall or picture lights above the sofa and maybe something to light up the shelves

if you did want more display you could consider this instead? I think ornaments mixed amongst books would look good

Thank you. Love the lamps on both sides. Agree with you both that it’s not a very practical option.
