Kitchen Layout Issues

Apologies for the mess! Currently, my kitchen is not suitable for its intended purpose. Therefore, I have decided to buy three additional wall units for the left-hand side walls. (See kitchen design mock up graphic)

Adjacent to the oven, there is a large built-in fridge. Below the current microwave, there is an integrated dustbin unit, and under the toaster, there is a washer dryer. In the second picture on the left, the last floor-leveled unit is a dishwasher.

Ideally, I want all appliances to be hidden from the worktop. I have already bought a 3-in-1 tap, which eliminates the need for a kettle. However, my biggest concern now is where to place the microwave. I am open to purchasing a built-in one if necessary.

Happy to hear your thoughts!! Even if that entails moving everything around.

Having a unit so close above the sink is not a good idea. I think your sink is too close to the hob. I would move it down 1 unit width. Rather than wall units I would add a full sized larder unit with a pull out carousel for ease of access where you have that 3 tier storage rack at present. Mount the microwave under the cabinet above it currently and put the toaster there.

It depends on how much you want to spend. It sound like you want more storage and an integrated microwave.

To by all means buy additional wall units. I like the contrast of the current wall units so I would replace those doors to match the new cabinets and I would choose something different to the base units. I would also buy a corner filler for the wall cabinets. I agree with Isla that you need to be careful of head height over the sink so your options to have reduced depth wall cabinets on the sink wall, have normal depth but a bigger gap over the worktop, or omit the over the sink.

And I think I would buy a new oven tower that accommodates the appliances you want. Don’t forget that if you buy an additional high power oven you may need some rewiring.

In the main I agree with Patricia. I would move the dining table to the living area, move the living area to the kids room, move the island a little more to the right so it is just a little more over than the width of the entrance walkway, at the moment it is more to the left and almost interrupts the entry flow enough to keep catching your self on the edge, with the table moved it will allow this, plus there may be enough room for more storage on the right hand wall decorative or practical and naturally shallower than standard depth, consider what it would be used for then you can make an informed decision on depth. The island sink and bin are not far from the tall unit pantry and fridge, so no I don't think they are to far away, whatever you get from these places are to be opened probably by the sink or bin, or opened to eat from the packaging. Also why would you have a log burner and an aga in the same room unless your aga is an electric one? They both give of tremendous heat, an aga is constant and unless you have planned for other oven types it will be year round so summer as well, as Patricia mentioned bare in mind how the sun transits your house, where it's position is when you will be in these areas which I'm guessing will be most of the time. I know plenty of people who gave had " improvements revamps etc" to their kitchen dining living spaces with plenty of regrets, loads of glass to bring the outside in, underfloor heating and an aga, the underfloor heating is switched off you can't zone it to where you want it, and the aga gives of to much heat with the glass combined, all the hard surfaces, no acoustics were considered by the so called "architects" sound is a problem too, something else to consider, someone else had to have some of their new kitchen change to make room for an air conditioning unit because of the heat, this is very expensive to run constantly, summers are almost unbearable, these things also affect materials being used such as leather and wood drying out and cracking/splitting. Hi Helen, The fridge position is ideal so I suggest you move the radiator to the other side of the door and turn the door so its opens back against the fridge. This will increase the feeling of space in the whole dining area. You won't regret the length of your breakfast bar so I wouldn't worry about the gap sizes, 1200 is an ideal but 1000 is more than sufficient. Could you turn the door into the utility so that it opens inwards and not into the kitchen area? It would eliminate having to manoeuvre round the door when open and reduce congestion in the kitchen especially with traffic flow past the end of the breakfast bar. Alternatively you could consider a pocket door which slides into the wall if there is enough space. Good luck!

Hello, i hope you can offer some advise on this. i am planning on adding an open plan kitchen/living/dining to the rear of my house. i really love the idea of a wall of units and long island, however i would also like a walk in pantry and am unsure if the space is too tight. there is nothing finalised yet so all windows and the shown pantry wall are movable. unfortunately the walls to the left of where the pantry is show are the current external walls and are not movable. all advise is appreciated. also which would you recommend Range or double ovens? Thanks

Agree with Jonathan and siobhanmcgee90. I have wall cabinets over the sink (I inherited the kitchen) and I hate them. It also restricts the type of tap you can have. I like tall mortuary spray taps, so useful. Go for the 300mm depth units and omit the one over the sink. It does look nice and open though as it is but if you don't have enough storage then thats the tidiest way to solve it. I like open shelves but there is dust and a lot of extra cleaning. An oven bank including your microwave is a very efficient use of space. Try and leave a bit of open space for a shelf for cookbooks or a plant or some sort of display as it is very neutral.

@siobhan, I'm sorry, but even though I completely agree with you, I would have to redo the plumbing in order to move it down further. Regarding the full-sized larder unit, where do you think it would be best to place it? Did you mean on the left side at the end of the kitchen where the last unit is and then the unit on top the be used for the built in microwave?

@jonathon, just to clarify, when you mentioned the contrast cabinets, did you mean that it would be best to have all the wall mounted cabinets wooden and leave the base level ones ivory as they are?

I've added a floor plan below that may better explain the status quo.
