I’ve just pulled up the carpet between the two front doors of our Victorian terrace house (near Cardiff if that makes any difference). I found terrazzo tiles beneith and wondering if these would be original or something added in the 1920s?
The Victorians would have probably used a geometric designed tile so I think that this terrazzo was added later. I suspect that the 1950s style wall tiles might give you a clue to when.
it could potentially be possible. I've attached links, one is the history of mosaic/terrazzo in the UK and a link to an 1890 floor being restored in Penarth, Cardiff. As you’re probably aware a large number of Italians settled in the Cardiff area arriving from the late victorian era and there seems to be a fair bit of terrazzo around there.
it may be worth getting someone in with a view to restore it who could give more info as the tiles seem a bit plainer than expected.
